As old European towns go, Luzern is pretty much average. Some interesting architecture, some interesting history. Definitely walkable.

The old town isn't as spectacular as that of Bern or St. Gallen, but still it's not to be missed. The painted buildings are wonderful!

Old Town was originally conceived by the Romans. In the center you'll find squares and narrow streets two chariots wide. See for yourself. Walk around and breathe in the ambiance.

Not much "old" is left of it - mostly is shops and restaurants, but they shut down early even on weekdays.

From the churches, to the bridges to the castle etc. there is a lot to see. I got up early to avoid the buses and the heat, and got some good photos without hoards of people. Right across from the train station and boat dock.

If you choose to visit Lucerne the old town is a must. It has different brand to shop but even if you have no plan to shop a walking in the old town gives additional impression of the city

I think you would be more than fine with a puffy jacket, light sweater, and good shoes. I've lived here for three years and visited previously to that and never had to wear a hat and gloves in May. Light layers would be... More
