The Abbey Library St. Gallen, famous for its beautiful baroque hall, is one of the oldest libraries in the world. And it holds one of the most important manuscript collections in Europe, especially for the Carolingian and Ottonian period from the 8th to the 11th century. The collection is presented to the visitors in changing and thematised expositions. The library forms the central part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Convent of St. Gallen.

Amazing experience. To visit one of the oldest libraries in the world, to read in the monastery rule from 850 that "one shall read every day", to admire the heritage created by thousands of people over the last 1300 years, arising even with bolder plans after devastating setbacks, was equally humbling and inspiring.

This museum has very few tags in English or any other language than German ( not even French) So there is a very high probability of not getting anything other than the architecture and the decoration. It s a pity because there are very interesting pieces

Management response:

Dear visitor I am sorry, but what you are writing is really not true - at least not for the main part for the visit in our famous baroque hall. There are tags for all the exhibition pieces in English and German, there is also an audioguide in German, French, English and Italian. And in our new exhibition the panels... More

The library is definitely worth a visit. CHF12 gets you a ticket to the library and the lapidarium (museum). The library has books well over 1000 years old and has displays showing the evolution of handwriting as well as illuminated manuscripts. The only danger is here that you must wear slippers over your shoes and these are a considerable falls... More

One should visit St Gallen just to see this ancient gallery. Photo is not allowed inside, you put slippers on your shoes to get in.

A very well preserved book collections and library. I felt like I am on a time travel. It is forbidden to take photos which is quite understandable. it is a feast for your eyes only!

Incredible place preserved well and one of the must visit places in St Gallen. Not only does the abbey tell the story of the cathedral, it is also a good starting point to know more about of the history of St Gallen itself.

Beautiful place. Small but very nice. The cellar is maybe not so impressive but the bib. I always have to complain about ridicolous photo restrictions. If you pay 160CHF you can - if not you can't.

Proving websites cannot be relied upon, we found contrary to their website , the Library WAS indeed open..& be prepared to have to really hunt it down because its NOT marked clearly & is very tricky to find even when you are INSIDE the building that houses it! Having said getting there no mean feat it was more than worth... More

This tour was filled with so many detailed facts. The Library is gorgeous! We paid for the audio tour which was well worth it (only 5 CHF more). The audio tour takes about 1.5-2 hours. It takes in from the inside/out and the library. Well worth it.
