The Gornergrat (3,089 m) is one of those places that everyone should visit at least once in a lifetime. The mountain panorama and the glorious view of the Matterhorn are unforgettable. With its sunny observation platform accessible all year, the Gornergrat, at an altitude of 3,089 m, has been one of Switzerland’s top excursion destinations since 1898. The Gornergrat Bahn was the world’s first fully electrified cog railway. Today it is a modern, eco-friendly railway, equipped with a regenerative braking system that generates electricity on the descent and so saves energy. All year: •Photo subject: 29 mountains above 4,000 m in view (Switzerland, Italy) •Shops •Restaurants: self-service and waiter-served, indoors and out •Large sun terrace •“Bernhard von Aosta” chapel •Panoramic viewing platform Summer: •Wild ibex near the viewing platform of the station •Starting point for hikes •Sunrise trips (bookable offer) •Sunset dinners (bookable offer) •For families: “Wolli and the climate detectives” (audio guides available from Zermatt Tourism and the Gornergrat Bahn cog railway) Winter: •Dining with the stars (bookable offer) •Moonlight visit (bookable offer) •Direct access to the pistes and winter hiking paths •Highest sledging slope in Switzerland (Rotenboden 2815 m - Riffelberg 2582 m) •Igloo village on 2727 m

If fortunate to have a Swiss rail card this is half price, about £39:00 each. Although the journey is only 25 minutes the scenery is really something and there is no hurry to see and be done with. A whole day is easily spendable, what...More

Amazing views of the Matterhorn and huge Glacier fields, go up part way or all the way up to 10000 feet on the railway assisted by cogwheel and tracks. We stopped just below midst action with our back roads hiking group for an amazing picnic...More

We walked up from Zermatt to Gornergrat. There are a lot of fantastic views during the hiking tour. The magic moment arrives at the top: Even as a Swiss habitant we were stunning about the beauty of the mountain peaks and glaciers. Fantastic!

For those with time to spare, I suggest booking a package ticket to cover Matterhorn and Gornegrat as its cheaper. There is also a half price ticket to Gornegrat if you take the cogwheel after 3pm if I recall correctly. I took the cogwheel train...More

Beautiful train trip and amazing Matterhorn 360’ view! You can get off the train at any station and continue hiking. Many people get to the top and come back on foot. Highly recommended!

Closest "regular" people can get to the Matterhorn. Following a wonderful train ride, we disembarked at the view lookout. A short walk further takes you to the highest lookout spot where we not only had a gorgeous view but also saw an Ibex!

We took the train to the last stop and had beautiful views of the Matterhorn. It was a clear day. Many people took the train to the last stop and walked down to the other stops. Not too crowded.

Went to Zermatt for a romantic weekend with my husband, and it was amazing! Unfortunately the weather was not the greatest, with a lot of wind and we couldn't visit the lakes we wanted, neither see the Matterhorn, that was in the clouds, even though,...More

gornergratbahn.ch/en/weather/ You can get live updates and a webcam view on the above Gornergrat Bahn site. As Fred stated UV goggles are essential to shield from the glare of sun reflecting off the snow.

I don’t see it being a full day, unless the weather is perfect and you do some extensive hiking. More likely, half day.
