The Gornergrat (3,089 m) is one of those places that everyone should visit at least once in a lifetime. The mountain panorama and the glorious view of the Matterhorn are unforgettable. With its sunny observation platform accessible all year, the Gornergrat, at an altitude of 3,089 m, has been one of Switzerland’s top excursion destinations since 1898. The Gornergrat Bahn was the world’s first fully electrified cog railway. Today it is a modern, eco-friendly railway, equipped with a regenerative braking system that generates electricity on the descent and so saves energy. All year: •Photo subject: 29 mountains above 4,000 m in view (Switzerland, Italy) •Shops •Restaurants: self-service and waiter-served, indoors and out •Large sun terrace •“Bernhard von Aosta” chapel •Panoramic viewing platform Summer: •Wild ibex near the viewing platform of the station •Starting point for hikes •Sunrise trips (bookable offer) •Sunset dinners (bookable offer) •For families: “Wolli and the climate detectives” (audio guides available from Zermatt Tourism and the Gornergrat Bahn cog railway) Winter: •Dining with the stars (bookable offer) •Moonlight visit (bookable offer) •Direct access to the pistes and winter hiking paths •Highest sledging slope in Switzerland (Rotenboden 2815 m - Riffelberg 2582 m) •Igloo village on 2727 m

So never got to see the Matterhorn because of the snow but the glacier was interesting. Prices in the cafe are stupid crazy high, 10F for soup, 22F for airline size wine. Went with friends and had a good time. It was better to go...More

The views from Gornergrat are stunning! Here are a few tips to make the most of your visit. 1) Don't purchase your ticket in advance and don't go up if the peaks are shrouded in clouds since you won't see anything. 2) If you wish...More

Enjoyable journey on the cog wheel train to the top of Gornergrat from where you can see many mountains over 4000m and several glaciers. Excellent photo opportunities. We paid for a local guide to share stories of local history and walk us part way down...More

Visits on three consecutive days. Even on the first one with the tops hidden in cloud the glaciers were still spectacular. The second and third days were clear and magnificent. A wonderful experience. It is also worth exploring the stations on the way up/down. We...More

Another great location to view the stunning Matterhorn. At 3089m high Gornergrat, I felt so close to the Matterhorn and the Swiss Alps. Worth going.

There wasn't any snow at the top of the Gornergrat but if you do the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise trip there was plenty of snow there. Free toboggan rides too! See my review of it. Hope you enjoy your trip.

We were there May13 of this year. Took the 10 am train. I think morning is nice but the weather changes quickly up there so its always a guess at best.
