Old Town sits on both sides of the canal. It consists of many historic buildings.

I agree. I covered a fair bit of the city (not the lake) in about 1 1/2 hours.

You have direct trains to Zürich HB (central station). And it is next to the old town so you can go for 2h walk without problems. Everybody speaks English specially in the center. Don't worry.
