The Man With Two Hats monument symbolizes dualities. It represents the end of the horrors of war but in the same vein the peace and freedom. It symbolizes the two countries of Canada and the Netherlands. The outstretched arms symbolize the liberation of the Netherlands and also the reaching out of country to country. With the donation of this monument, the Netherlands pays a lasting tribute to Canada. A statue identical to this one stands in Ottawa, Ontario. The twin monuments symbolically the solidarity between Canada and the Netherlands. The location is just on the opposite of "De Naald" a famous monument of Apeldoorn. It is not really an attraction unless you are interested in the history of war

The eyes of the man without genitals look sinister, not to say whacky. The hats are supposed to express opposites (war and peace, joy and sadness etc.), but look very much the same. From a distance the man looks a bit lonely and helpless, not my expectation of a War memorial. Anyway, I got the message: thank you Canada for supporting the war effort against Nazi Germany and for welcoming our refugees Juliana, Beatrix and Irene van Oranje.

The man with the two hats is the National Canadian War Memorial and honours the Canadian efforts in liberating the Netherlands during the Second World War. The two hats represent war and peace, repression and freedom, life and death, sadness and joy. The hats can also be seen as a representation of the Netherlands and Canada.
In Ottowa a similar statue is located. Both statues mark the special relationship of the two countries.
