Quite pleasant. Many little cafe's and restaurants, some galleries. Green space in front of Rijks cannot be really enjoyed in winter, but there is skating instead.

This is an area you will have to visit more than once to see everything. The Rijksmuseum, I Amsterdam Sign, Ice rink, Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, Ateliergebouw Museum, beautiful lawns and buskers are just some of the things to see. Expect hundreds of tourists and long queues at all the museums. The area is easily accessible by tram. Get... More

...but expect to make several visits. The quarter is rich in real estate and priceless in its art collections and it draws thousands of people every day. Our first attempt to visit the Rikjsmuseum was futile even though we had each purchased a museumkart (essentially a pre-paid card that allows you to walk into the museum. There is supposed to... This is a must see for all ages and travelers. So much to see and do, easy to get to from anywhere in the city. No 2 tram from central takes you right outside.

Make sure to buy tickets online for the big museums in this area. It is nice to just walk the streets, watch people move, buy some food (expensive and crowded in all nearby cafes and restaurants, there are many stalls with different food). There is an ice skating ring as well.

A great way to spend Christmas Day, along with the rest of Amsterdam. It was packed. Lots of market stalls and ice skating. Very festive and pretty. Huge queues for the museums, especially the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum. Definitely book online before or there is a museum shop onsite where you can buy tickets to both (much smaller queues)

Staying in Museum Quarter (Museumkwartier)

Neighbourhood Profile
Museum Quarter (Museumkwartier)
Top sites to see in this attractive and affluent part of town include the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, to name but two of the highly acclaimed museums of the aptly named Museum Quarter. And if you need a break from all the fantastic art, there’s the Neoclassical Concertgebouw music hall and Vondelpark, the city’s largest park. Shopaholics and luxury brand connoisseurs will love exploring the high-end shopping destinations of PC Hooftstraat, Van Baerlestraat, Cornelis Schuytstraat, and Jacob Obrechtstraat, where even the shop window displays are of museum quality. In the evenings, when the museums close and the daytrippers head home, the area becomes a quiet oasis of calm with a sophisticated and urbane tone.
