About
At one of Amsterdam's most famous parks, travelers can enjoy a host of outdoor activities amid beautiful English-style landscaping. Here, you can hike the countless trails or ride a bike around to spot charming bandstands and even a sculpture by Picasso along the way. Have a picnic by the pond as herons and ducks waltz past or pop by one of the many cafes in the park.
You might want to visit between April and May to see the park awash with tulips in bloom or between May and September to watch live concerts at the open-air theater.

Top ways to experience Vondelpark
The area
Neighbourhood: Museum Quarter (Museumkwartier)
Top sites to see in this attractive and affluent part of town include the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, to name but two of the highly acclaimed museums of the aptly named Museum Quarter. And if you need a break from all the fantastic art, there’s the Neoclassical Concertgebouw music hall and Vondelpark, the city’s largest park. Shopaholics and luxury brand connoisseurs will love exploring the high-end shopping destinations of PC Hooftstraat, Van Baerlestraat, Cornelis Schuytstraat, and Jacob Obrechtstraat, where even the shop window displays are of museum quality. In the evenings, when the museums close and the daytrippers head home, the area becomes a quiet oasis of calm with a sophisticated and urbane tone.

- Megan CBarnsley, United Kingdom10 contributionsLovely escape from city centreFantastic area to get away from the busy centre. We stayed nearby so walked through and it was a lovely change from the rest of the city. There is a cafe in the middle but it was closed when we went - I can imagine it would be lovely in the spring/summer for a picnic.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 January 2023
- MrMrsHappyRLiverpool, United Kingdom1,158 contributionsNice parkLarge park to the south of Amsterdam centre. Worth a visit if you are going to the nearby Van Gogh Museum or Rijkmuseum. Nice to wander around on a winter's day. Lots of small lakes and statues.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 February 2023
- SMBAndover, United Kingdom47 contributionsGreat for a wanderThe Saturday morning we walked around with a coffee and pastry and it was lovely. Close to our hotel, the park is large with alot of people on bikes, running or playing football. Alot of dog walkers too. There are lots of paths to take with little bridges and lakes. Lovely if yoy are visiting museums nearby or want to relax from the hustle and bustle of the centre.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 February 2023
- Sally LChester, United Kingdom143 contributionsNice open spaceGreat escape from the bustling city streets. Loved the parakeets flying freely and clearly enjoying the park. Pity they don’t have separate cycling and pedestrian paths as bikes clearly rule the routes and pedestrians bewareVisited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 February 2023
- NickofSurreySurrey, United Kingdom700 contributionsNice parkVery nice park in the centre of the city. Very busy on a nice spring day. Has at least two places where you can sit and get a beer and something to eat. We got lost a few times looking for it. Would have been much easier to jump on tram number 2 which stops right near the park entrance and took us back to Amsterdam Centraal Station in 10 minutesVisited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 April 2023
- FamilyW149Manchester, United Kingdom29 contributionsA lovely oasis, great for people-watching in the sunSpent a little time here in a very busy long weekend to rest my feet and absorb some sunshine. Very chilled out and clean. A couple of guys cycling round offering cold beers for sale - not sure if legally - but as I didn't want one, I don't know how expensive (or cold!) they wereVisited April 2023Written 1 May 2023
- Maz A42 contributionsLovely Park amidst the Chaos of the cityThis is a lovely spacious park. I took a walk around it after going to the museums, I did not stay too long as I was tired from walking all over the city. This park is approx 40 mins from Centraal station. It is very picturesque place, I enjoer wsyed observing the wildlife and lakes. The weather was good and you could easily spend all day here. Its worth a trip here if you have the time.Visited June 2023Travelled soloWritten 6 June 2023
- Tin_ManilaManila, Philippines375 contributionsGreat park to have a picnic and relaxWe stayed here for an hour or two to relax, eat and nap while our son played in the grass. We didn't have time to go further inside because we were already happy with our spot under a tree just maybe a 100 meters from the entrance. We were here to kill time before our canal cruise and I'm glad we went here. It was a hot summer afternoon and this is the perfect place to go. Just buy snacks/drinks at the nearest AH, bring a picnic blanket or just some cloth to cover the (slightly wet/cold grass) then you're good.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 6 July 2023
- Az & GabbsYealmpton, United Kingdom29 contributionsBeautiful parkWhat a beautiful but very very busy park! It’s a large area and you can easily spend hours wondering around and taking in the trees, flowers, statues, fountains and wildlife! Perfect for a sunny day with a picnic! - Dtappel37 contributionsA peaceful park to exploreWe stayed near Vondelpark while visiting Amsterdam, and it was a good place for our children, age 4 and 6, to explore. It would make a good visit for anyone though as there are many different areas of the park. You’ll see lots of people walking, biking, and picnicking. A good way to see the people of Amsterdam living life.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 31 July 2023

I was told to go to Amsterdam Bos, but I liked this one much better. Firstly, it's closer to some of the other sites I wanted to see--it's about a 20 minute walk from all the museums etc. The park itself isn't that big, but there's tons of stuff to do here. I saw plenty of food, picnic spots, places to bike, or just sit and relax. There are public restrooms, which I always love. It's accessible by buses, which are very easy to use in Amsterdam if you have Google maps--just make sure you understand how to pay, because the Dutch aren't super patient with people who don't know what they're doing. The area is picturesque, surrounded by gorgeous homes. I'd definitely recommend spending a little time here.

Unplanned circumstances allowed us to become well acquainted with Vondelpark in the heart of Amsterdam. We had Sunday reservations at both the Van Gogh & Rijksmuseum. We had no idea that the Amsterdam Marathon was being run that day! Sunday morning, as we tried to access the Van Gogh Museum, we discovered that we would have to use an alternate, longer route. We hurried through Vondelpark and finally found a bridge that took you over the participants. After our time in the museum, we leisurely walked through the park to then discover that getting into the Rijksmuseum would be just as difficult. Vondelpark is a beautiful green space in the center of Amsterdam!

We had rented bicycles from A-Bike Rental that is close by, as there are no bicycle rent shops inside the park. The park is quite massive, though there are lots of people cycling, walking or just relaxing. Little to do inside the park though, so we just cycled several times around.

Really beautiful and popular with dog walkers, runners and walkers (and of course tens of thousands of bicycles). Pretty water features, tennis courts, paly parks and cafes. Took about an hour to walk the circumference.

Vondelpark was the first place i visited when i arrived in Amsterdam. It was a lovely hot day and this was a perfect place to wander and relax after my flight. This is a huge park with wide open grassy areas as well as lots of paths for the many bikes that whizz by so please be careful and watch where you are going. On my walk I spotted a lovely blue bridge, lots of willow trees and a huge heron right by the river. There were water fountains and statues and probably lots more interesting things to see as you walk further but I didn't have time. But definitely a great place to relax and unwind on a sunny day.

What's the best time of day to visit the park? And what about the weather on beginning of March, will it be suitable to have a walk there or not? Any hints would be appreciated

hello - what is this park like in November? I will be here Nov.20th and am wondering if it will be too cold to enjoy, and if all leaves/trees will be dead. Anyone go in November? Was it just as lovely?

Hello, I went to Amsterdam end of November/beginning of December two years ago and it was beautiful, Very autumnal - ie cool but not freezing. I walked around without my gloves and hat but best wear a good warmish coat in case as the park is very big so takes a while to walk from one end to the other. I don't remember a play park but there is lots to see. Look out for the parakeets!! There is a café within the park but also at both the entrance/exit to the park there are loads of cafe's/restaurants.

Whilst we were there we didn’t see many places to eat! However, there are nice places to eat outside or I recommend going to the outdoor food market and getting a picnic! 😊
