This area in the oldest part of Amsterdam is known for the red neon windows that display barely-dressed prostitutes advertising their services; it's all perfectly acceptable as long as it stays inside this designated area of the city.

I had no intention to visit this place but it was right across the Centraal Station easy to walk to. An area for men all ages but not interesting for women I guess . The Pot Caffees are really interesting to see as they are legal only in this part of the world. Overall experience as a woman ... not... More

This area is supposed to be one of the must see places in the city. A visit here made me feel sad and uncomfortable. I am not a prude but it is really sad seeing all these half naked women standing in front of a window begging for someone to come in. The only people walking around this area were... More

Definitely somewhere you have to see If you are staying in Amsterdam try the bulldog coffeeshop too. Not a very good place if you get very stoned

A must see when your are in Amsterdam! Great to experience in the day and at night time. Some great Chinese restaurants, sex shows, sec museums and of course the girls in the windows. We loved the whole vibe and experience of it!

Couldn't travel to Amsterdam and not visit the Red Light District. We arrived pretty 'early' so there were not many ladies to see, though the ones we did were more attractive and normal looking than I expected. You walk along the sidewalk and their glass doors are right at the sidewalk so you are very close to them. When the... More

You just have to go to experience this. There is nothing like it in the US so it was very interesting. We went on a weekend night and it was FULL of people.

We might have taken this walk a bit early in the day. But except for one oh! From my boyfriend spoting a naked behind and the sweet smell from the coffe shops it reminds me off the party streets of greece and turky.

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
