This area in the oldest part of Amsterdam is known for the red neon windows that display barely-dressed prostitutes advertising their services; it's all perfectly acceptable as long as it stays inside this designated area of the city.

Love this place. So good for a walk through at night when the girls are working and the lights are on. Much less working girls than the last time I visited

There are pimps walking around the whole canal, on both sides. DO NOT take photos of the girls in the window, and for the most part, just be safe and keep your phone away so they don't think you're taking photos even when you're not. Obviously, my husband and I weren't looking for any services from the Red Light District,... More

Everyone should experience the area. Not seedy but very touristy. We visited by night but many people visit by day. Be careful for the pick pockets

It was okay ( went with a group of girls) Not to much else to say about it. I think adventurist couples would enjoy it !

I heard about this place before, but I didn't expect that there is a place in world like that. Sorry for my expressions, but they are selling and showing this girls like a products in public. This place is a big shame to humanity. Not recommended for families, kids, and anyone who has a sense of humanity.

Having been to Amsterdam before I had the heads up and the friends I was travelling with were clueless. I thought it would be an experience for them to see this too. We strolled along the streets and enjoyed the night with people of different walks also enjoying their stay at Amsterdam.

A must do while in Amsterdam... I always wondered what the fuss was all about and now I know. Walking the red light district is actually pretty safe. It is amazing how this is legal and if you want a girl just go up and get busy... It wasn't awkward but I would hate to have to do this night... More

Finding the red light district was a bit difficult but after figuring out we needed to leave the tram at 'Dam' station and walk a couple of streets up we found it. The area is set up along the canal and up and down multiple alley ways. As expected lots of very attractive women in doorways dressed in very little... More

So me and my husband decided to see what all the fuzz was about in this district. I must say it was really awkward for a woman like myself to see all those drewling and drunk or high guys looking at the women in the windows in theyre underwear. Didnt know where to look. This is probably more suitable for... More

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
