The Tropenmuseum is a museum about people, housed in an impressive listed building overlooking Amsterdam's Oosterpark. The extensive permanent display and regularly changing exhibitions feature objects that all have a story to tell about humankind. Stories about universal human themes like mourning, celebration, ornamentation, prayer, conflict. From Africa to West and Southeast Asia, from New Guinea to Latin America: come to the Tropenmuseum and discover that, despite cultural differences, we are all essentially the same.

What a wonderful place! Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to spend here as there is so much to see! Lots to learn about all the different cultures in Amsterdam and the history of The Netherlands. We also saw a great exhibit on music

I had the opportunity to visit this museum once, and I was astonished. Amazing grand building, several levels full of permanent and temporary exhibitions. Lively and really for all ages. Fresh ideas and +++ maintained. One annoying point; everybody has to leave his bags in a (paid) locer... which is not handy if you want to buy something from the... More

We just did a 3 night stay in Amsterdam. We visited Anne Frank house, van gogh, diamond museum and many more. Tropen museum was by far the best. The building inside and out is truly beautiful. It was not on my list yo do but seeing it from the outside in passing, I decided to see what it was and... More

The building is stunning from the outside, but wait until you get inside this big main hall, it's breathtaking! Loved the exhibition about the roots of RnB music! Very colourful, interesting and hands-on as you could listen to important songs of each genre. Colonial history was also interestingly displayed.

That's what I liked best about the Tropenmuseum. You don't read or see much about the centuries where the Netherlands had a far-flung colonial empire, and its "crown jewel" was what is now Indonesia. The museum has life-sized exhibits recounting the lives of Dutch settlers and traders, interspersed with much video and other documentation. It's very well presented, with special... More

This museum is located in East Amsterdam right on Ooster Park. It is in a beautiful old building that has a grand entrance ballroom. It is spread out over four floors all circling the hardwood ballroom. The exhibits are mostly to do with the south east Asia and a little bit of Africa. There is a junior section that is... More

I went to this museum because I had seen pictures and thought the architecture looked cool, which it was. The exhibits were interesting, looking at different cultures, but I honestly liked how the building looked more.
