Nieumarkt is the square bordering the eastern side of De Wallen. It's surrounded by restaurants and the De Waag is located there. Despite its name it's one of the older parts of the city. It's beautiful and picturesque. On New Years eve it's a war zone. It's where many people come to set off their fireworks. It's potentially dangerous, definitely... More

We really enjoyed this area full of Parisian style street cafes, markets and a lovely square. Easy to walk to and included on our walking tour, it's a great spot for people watching. You can also sample two of the local delicacies from the market - pancakes and herring.

Open Market on the weekends is a good place for bargain hunters and folks interested in buying produce (on Saturday). Otherwise, not much to see here -- lots of cafes, brown bars, restaurants. Good place to hang out if you just want to watch people go by.

This is a vibrant, true Amsterdam gathering place. It's what Americans would call "a plaza". Restaurants with lots of outdoor seating, a row of street vendors with Dutch cheese, souvenirs AND a not-to-be-missed seafood vendor that offers the best herring I've ever had (and I have never liked it!). My husband favored the deep fried cod bites. And the owner,... More

We had a 2nd floor apartment above the square. It is festive and quite loud if your room is right above it. There was a large market in the square on the Sunday of our arrival. It's a good place to people watch from one of the many cafes. There is also a very nice grocery store if you need... More

Nieuwmarkt (New Market) is an outdoor square where a daily outdoor market is held in Oude Zijde, just east of the Red Light District. This market dates back to the 15th century and can be an enjoyable experience for those planning to spend time in this area of Amsterdam. Today, the open markets are held daily at Nieuwmarkt. Antique and... More

lot of souvenirs from China, East, but not that much stuff related to Amsterdam. I would suggest to visit any other street market a bit away from city center

We discovered Nieumarket on a Sandeman New Amsterdam walking tour! Such a great discovery. I would recommend going to visit on a Saturday where all local produce is available. Apparently Sunday is more of a touristy market. You have to go purely to try the amazing stroopwaffles. I wish I could remember the name! Have a wonder round and you... More

This is a square located near the red light disctrict. A lot of chinese shops around too. This place is good for having a drink on a terrace, but that's it..

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
