Nieuwmarkt is off the Red Light District and the Chinatown area. The De Waag building is the most prominent in this square.

Excellent location to visit! We took a metro from Wibaustraat to here every day during our visit because we loved the sites in the area and walking through this square was wonderful. It has a fantastic array of pubs and cafes as well as being...More

It is sometimes difficult to pinpoint, but some places have immediately an attractive feeling and other places have not. Nieuwmarkt square is one of the former. It is indeed difficult to pinpoint, but Nieuwmarkt square has atmosphere. On one side are cafes and restaurants and...More

The square is large with a small market and surrounding cafés/bars/restaurants. Very typical Amsterdam.

This square is pretty large though spoilt somewhat by traffic which cuts off the square itself from its surrounding cafes, shops etc. There is a posh restaurant in the middle called The Waag and often a few stalls selling cheeses, vegetables, herring to one side.

Been living in this area for 30 years, it is a laid back square in compartment to some of the other ones in the city, with a lot of small relaxed bars and restaurants, don't forget to check out the side streets like koningstraat.

Not unlike other squares in Amsterdam but probably more historical and original. I would not go out of my way to go there, unless you have a lot of time and unless there is a food fair or flee market going on there. There are...More

This is a very cool historical site. In the center is the 'Waag' a historical gate that was originally part of the walls of Amsterdam. Rembrandt actually painted a famous picture here called 'the Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp.' Nowadays, you can normally find...More

Nieumarkt is just a 5-10 minute walk from Central Station. It is also a major Metro stop. the square is surrounded by cafes, bars and shops selling fairly inexpensive items. This square seemed to be used by more locals than tourists. Is it a "must...More
