If you want to escape the crowd of Amsterdam and have a breath just go there and walk along the docks... Dutch urban planners did an amazing work in fixing this industrial part of the town which look so new and modern and vibrant .

Looking to escape the crowds of central Amsterdam? Venture out to KNSM Island and explore the beautiful parks, take in the modern architecture, and get lost in the galleries and home good shops. The island is located on the edge of the Eastern Docklands district and is a 30 minute walk from central Amsterdam. For architecture lovers, be sure to... More

In this part of town I visited Amsterdam ArenaA. Seen from the train this neighborhood looks like a modern one, with a lot of new buildings, with glass facades and interesting architecture.

We come to this area once a while. The SAIL Amsterdam 2015 takes place in and around this area. It became a new part of Amsterdam as you can find everything here such as : hotels, restaurants, cafes, shops, supermarkets, Library, Music building, galery and many others. The modern architecture are seen everywhere but you can also find mix architecture... More

We joined our APT cruise ship here and noticed the many modern buildings across the water. It's a fine example of modern architecture but to be honest I think that the older buildings in Amsterdam are far more beautiful.

The reason for my title is that the apartment residences here are all new and beautiful on the inside, but the flavor of the old warehouses is still intact in the red brick exteriors. We visited an acquaintance here for dinner via tram from Centraal Station and felt like we were at her country home on the water, rather than... More

Surrounded by modern architecture but to the north of real Amsterdam. Other than the modern buildings it's pretty bland. You can get on and off your canal cruise at this point

We began our cruise from here on our beautiful Avalon ship it was an amazing experience. The whole trip was memorable, the captains, the crew, the food and the scenery. We stopped at many beautiful places before flying home from Prague. Cologne even in the rain was beautiful, the Lorelei in the sunshine unforgettable. A wonderful 70th birthday trip, lots... More

If you look for moder architecture and unusual shapes that is the place to pay the visit to. It's not a touristy area so you will also find quite enough places to eat an affordable dinner. I live here and after few months I am still coming to the docs to chill.

We enjoyed a leisurely evening stroll east along Piet Heinkade that begins adjacent to Central Station. It is in such contrast with central Amsterdam and the canal side houses. Soon in view were the ultra modern Muziekgebouw and Bimhuis. We crossed the pedestrian bridge and walked around the adjoining waterfront. We had marvellous views of all the surrounding harbour areas.... More

Staying in Plantage & the East

Neighbourhood Profile
Plantage & the East
The eastern edge of central Amsterdam provides visitors with the chance to imagine the city that Rembrandt called home (and to tour his historic house) while shopping like the thriftiest of locals at Waterlooplein’s massive flea market, or even enjoying a craft beer beside the tallest wooden windmill in The Netherlands. This verdant, serene, and stately part of town is home to Artis Royal Zoo, one of Europe’s oldest (and still best kept) zoos, and Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. It's also an ideal setting for the Dutch outpost of St Petersburg’s Hermitage.
