The Sanatorium Zonnestraal by architect Duiker is one of the earliest and most important examples of architecture of the Modern Movement. Apart from a high point in architectural history, the complex is also an important social landmark. Conceived as a follow-up colony cure tuberculosis sufferers prepare for their reintegration into society, is the brainchild of Sunbeam trade unionist Jan van Zutphen (1863-1958). His ideal is realized with money that the diamond workers union brings together the TB Patients on its members to help.Monthly tourEvery last Sunday of the month there are tours (1 ½ hour) provided by a professional guide. These tours start at 12.00 hours and 14.00 hours from Dresselhuis Pavilion (nr. 19). One should specify in advance to Landgoed Zonnestraal

UNESCO World Heritage, great place to walk

Nice place to walk around. The buildings are very beautiful. There is a lot of forest, some heather and even a small restaurant. Recommended.

We had a guided tour of the complex and our guide was great. He could tell us a lot of stories around the sanatorium and it was a pleasure to listen to him

It used to be a sanatorium, a complete self sufficient place for sick people to live. Nowadays it is a health center, but beautifully restored. If you are into architecture, you should go there! They do magnificent things with new measurements for buildings in respect of the old ones and if you live nature you also should go there. The... More

This building is a beautiful set of buildings which reflect a special period in the architectural era of the 20th century of the Nteherlands. There are organized tours around the facilities which where used for patients suffering of tuberculosis during the aftermath of the Second World War. It very nicely shows how the medical world thought about the disease as... More

I love the way this place has been preserved and taken back into use. It used to be a hospital and even still has the little resting cottages which were used for patients that had the plague. The location is situated in a forrest area to compliment the aspect of rest and peace.

Combine a visit to this architectural landmark with a walk through the adjoining forest. Good parking options.

Zonnestraat is only worth a visit if you wish to view modernist architecture. Otherwise its just a bunch of buildings with nothing else to do. The one exception is the 'blue pole walk'. This starts at the car park and continues for 5km through the woods. Good to walk the dog or go for a run. Not worth it for... More

Although built around 100 years ago as TBC santorium it makes the impression of being a modern design to capture to the absolute maximum the incoming sunlight
