Being used to the excellently maintained Kruidtuin in Leuven, Belgium, this certainly was a disappointment. Although high summer, hardly any plants blooming. Maybe the bad weather of the last 2 months had something to do with it, but still a bummer. Overall the gardens did...More

This is a garden to walk through even if you are not a garden fanatic. The views of the university and the canals are excellent, and you see a lot of the history of spice and tulip importing from the 15th century. There seems to...More

The location of these gardens and the plants themselves make this a very pleasant experience. Leiden is such a nice place to visit and the gardens take the stress of, say, touristy Amsterdam away. Perhaps the only criticism is the cost of visiting. Don't expect...More

Leiden is a peaceful city anyway but the Hortus is a peaceful haven anyway! Lovely grounds with plants and flowers from around the world. Sub- Tropical and Tropical houses (great in the winter months especially!!), an Orangerie. Sit and relax by the canal side. Walk...More

Hortus Botanicus Leiden is a pleasant though not particularly well maintained garden. Lots of informative signs in both Dutch and English. Worth a visit as a historical site, but I wish it was better maintained.

It is a botanical park. We were trying to find our way to the telescope, but it is not accessible from outside the garden. My wife decided we would go in anyway. It is €7.50 per adult to get in. If you have a pass...More

I live 5 minutes walk away from Hortus. We love to take a walk with kids in the garden. There is always nice atmosphere. It's the best place to be with sunny day. For plants lovers there are lots lots of different and rare cultures.

Note: if you're visiting museums (which the gardens accept in NL, get a Museumkarte, giving you access to 40 museums, great value. Very central, very well laid out. Beautiful and peaceful. Open until 6pm.

Worth a visit. A nice mix of in- and outdoor gardens and a astronomy building + tour thrown in as well

You can walk around for 1 up to 2 hours, depending on the time you have. If cold weather you can spend 30 min. up to an hour in the orangeries, where you find tropical weather.
