From the middle ages, a castle overlooked Brussels from Coudenberg hill....

From the middle ages, a castle overlooked Brussels from Coudenberg hill. From the 12th century, the successive monarchs and their representatives transformed a small fortified castle into a sumptuous residential palace, one of the most beautiful palace of Europe and one of Charles V's main residences. This prestigious building is severely damaged by fire in 1731. Some forty years later, the ruins of the palace are pulled down and the ground flattened out for the construction of the new royal district. The remains of this palace make up the Coudenberg archaeological site.

This is the former palace. It is right next door to the current palace and right across from the park. The road in front is very wide and seemed dangerous to cross. This is well maintained and very interesting as the architecture is older.

While the site is well maintained and fairly extensive, I found the information lacking. Many rooms or areas didn't have any panels whatsoever, and without the audioguide it is extremely difficult to gain a sense of what used to occur in these spaces other than broadly going "ah, this was the Cathedral." More could be done to really engage visitors... More

My husband and I travelled to Brussels during the Christmas holidays and we really enjoyed our visit to Coudenberg. I didn't know a thing about the place and was really surprised. We spent about 1.5 hours there and used the audio guide which was great! They actually have the first taxidermic horse in there...gross but cool lol. The place may... More

The attraction itself was quite interesting, but we had an issue with how it was managed. We arrived about 3.30pm, it closes at 5pm. We made our way through the rooms/ corridors reading about what we were seeing. This was quite interesting. At approx 4.40pm we headed towards the final section of the route. You have to go outside and... More

Historic, interesting architecture details, like walking through an architectural excavation. Self directed tour with explanation in English and other languages

We spent there recently 1,5 hours. It is really exciting to see how Bruxelles developed. Audio guide is recommend, otherwise you will miss the information. Better than an audio guide is to get explanations from the staff. We got a lot of informations from a young student who volunteers there. Thanks Henrietta

I loved Coudenberg. It's a little hidden gem bang in the center of town. I thought it was a museum but it turned out to be an underground ancient city. Brilliant for a hot day

Coudenberg was a fantastic place to explore with little scooby doo fans. We enjoyed reading about the history of the place as well as looking out for traps and baddies. We really enjoyed our visit here.

This is a relative newly opened museum, and an intriguing one. Above ground one gets a glimpse of the grand sparkly white architecture of the royal palace (it is in fact its right wing). But most exciting for me are the underground corridors and spaces, where it becomes clear how the levels of the surrounding streets have changed over the... More

Huge archaeological complex, very well organized to walk around. The guide book provided with admission is very helpful in understanding what everything is. Definitely worth a visit
