The museum was established in 1954 and moved into its modern building in 1994. In 2011, it was awarded the “European Museum of the Year” price. The permanent exhibition... More

The Gallo Roman museum is a wonderful experience for young and old. The museum's main collection is of its region, however general history is touched as well. From time to time a temporary exhibition is displayed, check the website for more information.

I have often heard about this museum through the Belgian media. They organise big exhibitions which are always popular with children, in particular. On this occasion there was no special exhibition, but seeing the permanent exhibition was quite enough for us, as there is a lot to see. I thought the artifacts were displayed very well, although some displays are... More

The museum gives an overview of the history of the area, starting several ten thousands of years ago. The total visit takes 2 to 3 hours, which is just long enough. There are a lot of things you can touch, a lot of videos, displays etc. The perfect mix to keep your attention. There are several interactive things for the... More

Tongeren is the oldest city in Belguim. The Eburones were the Keltic tribe that lived in the area of Tongeren. In 54 BCE they revolted against Caesar, and in a surprise attach in the forest they ambushed and wiped out an entire Roman Legion. Caesar was so angry that he sent 2 legions and totally wiped out the Eburones or... More
