I always thought this was a kind of a secret location, only known to a select bunch of people. But for those who like the atmosphere of the old flemish beguinages, and don't like the crowded Bruges beguinage, this is a nice alternative. Mind you, there are real people living here, respect the intimate character! And they are renovating some... More

One approaches the convent from the north to find on the left an odd long walled building of indeterminate age along the road. Eventually one finds an unassuming entrance with a notice board of rules and regs. As one proceeds deeper an expensive interpretive notice board explains the history with an unproof read description 'since 17xx'. EU Interreg IV monies... More

A little bit far from the center and just a small street. Not the best in Belgium. If you have time, ok. Otherwise, I believe you can save some time to see the Beguinage in Leuven or Bruges.

After having visited multiple other beguinages in Holland and Belgium, I highly recommend a visit to Our lady of Ter Hoyen Beguinage. It appears the small townhouses are now rented out (i.e., signs for a very high end real estate company were posted on one). Nonetheless, what recommends a visit are the following factors: the beguinage is totally intact, very... More

It's a 10 minute stroll out of the main tourist area but well worth a visit. The tranquility within what is a very busy city is amazing.

I hesitate to make publicity for this beautiful beguinage, it is now so quiet en calm.... A flood of visitors would ruin this place that invites you to relax, think, meditate and find peace. Just two steps away from the centre and with a well hidden gate in the busy street. If you visit this oasis, please respect it too...

On the UNESCO World Heritage list. Take the time to walk the little streets and savour the atmosphere.

Lots of beguinages in the Low Countries by the sea, but this must be the largest one that still breathes the atmosphere of ancient times. No cars, lots of cobstones, small roads, some hundred houses, a peaceful meadow in the center, a baroque church. A hidden village where tourists don't come, although it's Unesco World Heritage.
