For tourists wanting to explore the surroundings of Leuven, a visit to the former Benedictine Abbey of Vlierbeek (“Abdij van Vlierbeek” in Dutch) is a rewarding option. You can cycle or walk (it’s about 2km from the railway station) or take bus 2 (Heverlee/Kessel-lo) from the railway station or the centre (Rector De Somerplein, former Fochplein). Get off at “Gemeenteplein”... More

The abbey was closed when we were there so we could only walk around and enjoy the setting.Terrace restaurant had extremely slow service but still enjoyable if not in a hurry. Walking through the cemetery also was interesting.

This cafe is located on the Abbey premises. Parking is just outside and a few steps away. It is a true pub. Enjoyed some beers and went for the spareribs. Desserts are Big, had a sorbet with 4 scoops. Yummy.

Excellent place to spend the evening of a warm day on a huge terrace in a beautiful and quiet atmosphere. Frequently visited by locals or by others after a bike or walk tours in the region. Pub is known for good spaghetti. Check opening hours.

The Abbey and surrounding area make for a great bike trip out of Leuven. Combine this with a visit to the nearby provinciaal domein kessel-lo. There is also a network of bike trails in the surrounding area which take you through a mixture of fields and suburbs. Grab a beer at the Abbey and relax a bit. :-)

This abbey really keeps the ambiance of the old days! A nice place for drinking good belgian beers or for having a tasty lunch!

Beautiful white church (surely in summertime) . There is a small pub right in front. Continuous restauration guaranties that the good state will be preserved.

The abbey is not very big but quiet charming. There is a very nice café next to it. They serve real Flemish snacks.
