This small museum is located in the former boathouses and provides a good and confronting insight into the why and how of the whaling industry in the Azores. This small museum focusses on the people and their lives in a whaling-community. It has a small...More

It was not an enjoyable visit because I can't understand the concept of killing a whale for commercial purposes. That said, the museum gave some interesting insights on how the hunt itself was done. However the place needs some work: the movie in english and...More

This museum is a really interesting place to visit to have an idea of the way of life of the last whale hunters in Europe.

Not very long ago this was how those on the island provided for their families they only took what they needed. Very simple lifestyle. Slow but consistent. Very relaxung.

Yes, some people may not like the idea of whaling, but this exhibition does show the economic needs of the times and the methods used. Extraordinary feats of courage needed to do this dangerous work. Many artefacts to be seen and the descriptions of the...More

We visited this museum by riding from Madalena to Lajes by public bus (the bus stop in centre of town, on both directions, is almost in front of the museum). The rainy day in fact has prevented us from the hiking we wanted to do....More

The film alone is worth the 2€ admission fee. Then there is the many exhibits from Pico's whaling days which are also very informative. They even have two full size whaling boats.
