For those interested in volcanology, the Algar is impressive, deep and mysterious with the lake at its bottom level. A combination ticket is sold for visitors of the nearby lava tunnels (not seen this time as we've seen plenty of them in Washington state and...More

Loved it here - amazing experience to go into a volcano! There are some steps, but we are not in good shape and were able to come back up with some breaks along the way. Absolutely great - highly recommended as a must do activity...More

This is one of the few volcanos where the opening is not closed. There is one beautiful and clean lake at the bottom. You can buy combined tickets for "Algar do Carvão" and "Gruta do Natal" and save money.

the color of the greenery in the grotto is amazing, the entrance to the interior of the earth, with the chimney through which the light falls, and at the bottom, going up the stairs, reach the lake. something beautiful, mysterious and delightful

There is an opening in the roof of the cave provides a natural light that we didn’t quite expect, then follow the steps down into the volcano where we find a small pool of crystal-clear water, very beautiful! You may want to put a hat...More

I believe it's open all year round. We were there in January. It is only open in the afternoon. Enjoy your trip. I love the Azores!
