No matter the time or day you can come see this fabulous archway in the middle of Coimbra, Portugal. I came early on a Sunday morning and Fado was playing. It's a great part of this city's architectural history. There is a museum attached and it's not always open so investigate times before you come. I would come back to... More

It's nothing special to look at & or to photograph, but it's the history attached to it that makes it reason to wander through it & remember it's purpose. Then just keep walking up past old buildings/homes/cafes, including the old cathedral until you get to the Uni.

It´s a place to pass through. Nothing special but history. You can find some good places to eat and some shops on the street.

Do not expect to be awestruck as it is after all just an archway. However it is quite interesting to visit and imagine the old city wall that once surrounded Coimbra. It is the gateway to the winding cobbled streets which lead up to the Alta and the university with the old cathedral (Sé Velha) to be encountered along the... More

We twice tried to find this museum before we were successful. It is tucked away just uphill (and up a staircase too) in the small square above the second gate. The museum is full of great information about Coimbra's castle and gates, and this info is very helpful for enjoying subsequent walks around the historic hillsides. Great interpretive video and... Also known as Arco de Almedina, this is the original main gate in the medieval defensive wall that once ran around the base of the hilltop part of the city. There are several souvenir shops and quaint cafes located within steps of the arch. Great photo opportunities here - if you can wait for the crowds to disperse.

An old city gate. Funilly hidden between much newer houses. The strange thing is you find yet another gate just behind it so one can see how strongly protected the city entrance was!

If you go to the university of Coimbra you most likely would pass thru this old fortress tower gate. There's a museum on the left hand side of the street right after the gate.
