Lisbon has so many different pockets of history, that seem to blend, connect and compliment and yet contradict each other at the same time. That's why I advise going on a walking tour and absorbing the different historical aspects of Lisbon.

This area is a must see, but having seen it on multiple pictures, I can definitely say it looks better there than in reality. Don't get me wrong - it has its charm - but is also visibly devastated by graffiti - and only some of them have any artistic value. Trams have also fallen victims to this ugly habit,... More

It was only after we had walked through it that we saw the sign that designated the area known as the Bairro Alto. As with the Alfama, one must see this area on foot. There is so much to look at that we kept changing the sides of the street.

We were staying within the area and the pubs and bars and restaurants were all within walking distance. It's an excellent place to base yourself for a few days or a week or two.

Genuinely great area to explore, part of the 'Real Lisboa'. It's very hilly though so be warned - wear very comfortable walking shoes - but it's SO worth it!

We were lucky enough to choose our hotel in Bairro Alto. One of the best miradouro is situated there "miradouro de santa catarina". You can find loads of amazing restaurants, bars and many attractions. During weekends is more busy but trust me, if you choose to be there you won't regret it !!

Wonderful mix of lively restaurants. Some specialising in Fado music and food. Some just bars and a really lively feel to the place. Great hop from one to another. We felt quite safe and were out most night til quite late

A tram visit at Bairro Alto is a must for the tourist. Take care pickpockets are there as it can be crowded. Recommend the 24 hour travel card for free access to buses, trams and funiculars. Great way to travel around the city.

Tiny streets, great food, and endless exploring in a city that still seems not quite discovered. I've been in both winter and summer and they each have their positives. Spring and summer brings flowering trees in little squares, and winter brings chestnuts and holiday decorations everywhere. Feels like home.

A view of real Portugal, don't eat as many cakes as I did though.. each shop is more delicious than the last. Go with a hungry tummy!
