In 1937 it was named "Barrete Verde" but soon iit was changed to the final name that acquired national and international fame: ADEGA MACHADO.

Today one may find a Fado House that renders homage to its history, to the founders and to all those who have added their personal and professional experiences to the memories of ADEGA MACHADO. In the Fado, Amalia Rodrigues proved her affection to this House with two yearly galas; the charismatics Alfredo Marceneiro and Fernando Mauricio came back many times. There are many to be named, but amongst those the interpreters Manuel Fernandes, Francisco Carvalhinho, Raul Nery, Adelino Santos, Beatriz da Conceicao, Maria Amelia Proenca, Maria da Fe and Mariza.

The space was totally refurbished based on a new project, with a total preservation of the famous tiled facade and in the interior an area was created to display the large collection of historical images: paintings, drawings and photographs, property of the Machado Family. There is now an additional area, the Wine Cellar that serves traditional tidbits together with a large choice of Portuguese wines.

We were a business group of 20+ and I had imagined that the evening at a Fado establishment would be some sort of tourist trap. But we were all very pleased with our great night out! First we all had a glass of port on the top-floor covered deck terrace, looking over the charming narrow streets of the old town.... More

Dear Madam / Customer, As a matter of fact, Adega Machado seriously fits with business groups, basing on our standards and options (we have also private events in one of our spaces - Adega Machado has 3 floors). So, your feedback is a huge compliment towards the work of many of us whom daily give their best effort. Thank you... More

The singers got their coats on and immediately left after their sets and the head waiter led the clapping in a forced way. Time is money. This place would be ok if they dropped trying to do fine dining and let the music speak for itself. Instead it was poor food in a strangely formal atmosphere that did not sit... More

Dear Customer, As a matter of fact, Fado music speaks for itself. Despite the waiters claps, that doesn´t force at all anyone to clap. In a closer observation, clapping, and even the intensity of it, as a sign of admiration, comes from the will and recognition of each Client. What you call "formal armosphere" we call "solemnity"", due the fact... More

We were going to O Forcado in Bairro Alto but the cab driver suggested Clube de Fado instead, saying O Forcado was a tourist trap. So when we got there,Clube de Fado had no tables available. After a few tense blocks as the driver drove aggressively through narrow, twisty streets of Bairro Alto, we arrived at Machado. We had been... More

Dear Sir, In first place, thank you very much for visiting Adega Machado. Also, for your impressive review, which terms are very correct. About the cab driver, there is not much to say, despite that, beaside the respectful existence of all this old and truly fado (houses) restaurants here mentioned, his suggestions are based on tips, so we can say... This is a case of price gouging coupled with churlish waitstaff. Our waiter showed his disgust when we didn't order his recommendations and asked questions about the prix fixe. The place was empty, and they were clearly trying to squeeze every penny out of us. Despite paying $125 for two people, we were made to feel unwelcome. I noticed that... More

Dear Client, Despite so, your statement was valued and inquired. We must say that we don´t recognize our selfs as you described us. We truly respect all our Clients, even when they decide to leave the restaurant when they don´t want to pay our quality. Maybe your mood in that night was not desirable. Anyway, thank you very for visiting... More

We went there on the Christmas day and we enjoyed not only the food that was really good -the fish of the day was really fresh but also the music. Though we are familiar to the Fado music we never have been in a live music hall. The four singers that appeared in turns were excellent, they performed without microphones, their... More

This is my first review to Adega Machado, but not the first visit. I visit Lisbon frenquently and this Fado House is my favorite. The food, service and of course, the fado, will give you a remarkable memory of your visit to Lisbon. The customers are mainly turists, but the fado presentations are small concerts for a true fado lover.... More

A well appointed, comfortable restaurant. The food appetizer and soup were excellent, the entrees good. The fado singers and musicians were entertaining. Very soulful music. Serves tour groups so may be crowded.
