A nice neighborhood. THE place locals frequent for shopping and dining. Full of beautiful houses, modern shops and posh restaurants. Fairly steep streets (Garret) and many "hidden" places.

We stayed there for our Lisbon visit near metro Rossio in Avenida Palace. Probably the most convenient place to stay. It is all walkable and compact without the need to climb hills.

This is a great area to hear local music, find out about Fernando Pessoa, see the worlds oldest bookstore Bertrand and soak in culture.

The ambience is wonderful with the squares lit up for Christmas and everyone shopping. It's a fun place to walk and shop but wear good shoes! The cobblestone streets and walkways and the hills are tough to do in heels.

Chiado is an interesting neighborhood in central Lisbon. It contains many restaurants and shops. We walked around late at night on each evening of our stay and felt safe on our excursions. There is an abundance of picturesque architecture. The hills are a little challenging but manageable. Nice tile work on many of the sidewalks.

Lisbon is large but a joy to walk around.. the Bairro & Chiado precincts are where its all happening with many! wine bars and restaurants .. the Lisbon food scene is exceptional and Lisbon itself will become even more of an attraction in coming years. Truly an exciting and interesting place to visit. A Must See !!

Great place to go to a bar, or dinner. Lots of places to enjoy, from the affordable to expensive. Take your time and explore this part of Lisbon. Go often.

Its a nice neighborhood to have a walk, and see the some of the sights this Lisbon neighborhood has to offer. Evenings are particularly nice and busy, though be prepared for some steep climbs!

This is the beating heart of Lisbon between the Bairro Alto and the Tagus, it boasts a great shopping district, some fantastic eateries, good connections (bus, metro and of course the 28 tram runs right through it) and street entertainment. A must go to when touring the city.

This seems to be a happening neighborhood with lots of restaurants, cafes and pastry shops. There are also retail stores. Street musicians perform. A good vibe.

Staying in Chiado & Carmo

Neighbourhood Profile
Chiado & Carmo
The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.
