The tower was built in 1998 for the Expo 98 exhibition to celebrate the great Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama. It is 145 meters high steel structure, designed by Leonor Janeiro and Nick Jacobs, in a form of the sail of a caravel.

As I suggested somewhere, I would recommend visiting this area during the night, after other attractions are mostly closed. Everything looks modern and beautiful (at least to me), so I would start at the Metro station, walk to this Tower and look at the bridge, than walk back to the Vasco da Gama Shopping center. Expo area and the river... More

It represents the sail of a ship, visible as you ride over the Vasco da Gama Bridge. Next to it is the new luxury Myriad Hotel.

It's fun, it's good, it's average. I would recommend sight seeing at night as it really adds and metropolis feel to it.

Nice to see. You can go see is when you're in Parque das Nacoes. Don't make a special tour for this one, because that will be a waste of time.
