A vast collection spread over 3 Floors with a very wide selection of differing styles spanning modern art. The political poster section had some unusual and important social commentary worthy of further exploration. As a free gallery this is well worth a couple of hours, especially if you enjoy the unexpected.

This purpose built Modern Art Museum, funded by business mogul Jose Berardo, is an incredible structure to house Berardo's sizable, high quality collections in various media. I'm not certain when the building was constructed but it must be in the last decade. It is modern and quite spacious. From the museum website it describes the collection: The Museu Colecção Berardo... More

Located right next to Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, this museum presents a unique amount of paintings, sculptures and installations. We arrived at 6pm and had only 1 hour to run through the successive rooms at level 1 and level -1 ... Better plan 2-3 hours to really enjoy it. From Picasso to the most recent masters of modern art, it is... More

A fabulous survey of mostly 20th C works, displayed in airy uncluttered spaces. The accompanying interpretive material provided a good overview of the different styles and stages in the development of contemporary art. These were available as handouts, but unfortunately they were out of the english version of 'Floor 1'. We took a lunch break between floors at the lovely... More

Plenty of different art from the last 100+ years. For the enthusiasts of modern art installations there is some floor space for it but not an interest of ours so not able to judge such exhibits. Appreciated the informative texts which accompanied each of the artistic movements. The exhibition of posters brought home some of the politics of colonial withdrawl... More

Staying in Belem

Neighbourhood Profile
Belém is the "capital of the Portuguese Discoveries" and a photographer's paradise. You can spend an entire day exploring this neighborhood: monuments (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries), museums (Coach Museum, Centro Cultural de Belém) and breathtaking views of the Tagus river will make your visit worth your time. Belém also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes, namely the famous - and delicious - "Pastéis de Belém" (typical Portuguese custard tarts; make sure you buy an extra box of those!). Easily accessible from Lisbon's historic center, Belém is a must-do, especially if you're spending more than one day visiting the Portuguese capital.
