The church was open and free. Inside the very large church one finds six organs. Next door, we walked around free part of the palace. In the courtyard we found a guy with four owls and two falcons. He explained he gives talks at schools. There is free parking to the right of the palace/church.

A must visit if your near Mafra. The palace and convent is a piece of Portugals history. Mafra is near Ericeira and so, after visiting the palace and the village we went for lunch to Ericeira. Nice village by the sea.

Huge palace, on the outside it looks very beautiful. We had some coffee in front of the palace, very nice place to enjoy my coffee.

The trip to Mafra is well worth it to get to know not only the palace and its history but also the surrounding area, which is breathtaking. The palace itself if worth a long visit, but the same applies to the little bakery shops in front of it with its delicacies, and the surrounding gardens. Ericeira is only a few... More

Visited this spectacular palace in March, 2017. We were not expecting such a grand and imposing historical building. It is indeed massive and is a palace, monastery, and basilica all together. It was a royal palace for King Joao V and has a magnificent library with over 36,000 books in gold embossed leather bindings especially commissioned for the palace. Well... More

It's a very big palace actually built for royal hunting. It's full of history of Portugese Royal family life but unfirtunatelly not very well preserved.

Massive palace you easily spend at least an hour walking around in its rooms and hallways. Free entrance on the first Sunday of the month. No need to buy the 1€ map because there will be information boards along the tour.

When visiting Mafra you should and must visit this Palace, specially if you are a "history lover". You can have a guide or visit by your own. There are always persons willing to explain you the "history" behind each thing you see.

I once asked my friend if he had ever been to Mafra and he said 'I think so'. The magnificent magnitude of this massive palace in the centre of the town means you will know when you have been to Mafra! It is in need of a lot of renovation, but go inside the basilica because it has (apparently) the... More

Mafra's palace is one of the most majestic palaces/convents you can find in portugal. Without a doubt the highlight is the superb library you can find in the palace. It is one of the largest ones in europe. And its beautiful. The rest of the palace is also really nice though to be honest it could use more descriptions along... More
