The Moorish Castle is a military fortification that bears witness to the Islamic presence in the region, and was probably constructed between the eighth and ninth centuries and later expanded after the Reconquista. Overlooking the town of Sintra, it served as a watchtower, guaranteeing the protection of Lisbon and its surroundings.

I just love old castles/ruins. This one simply got my heart. Amazing view. Specially around sunset. It is above Sintra, you can see it from every spot. You can easily go there by bus 434 or the tuk-tuk cars.

What a beautiful green scene to walk to the castle ruins and end up with breathtaking panoramas from the various vantage points. Truly something to see!

Castle of the Moors is a must in Sintra! Sintra is an easy train ride away from Lisbon, and much of it is walkable upon arriving. There is also the 434 & 435 buses for rides (inexpensive to use). The Castle of the Moors sits...More

Amazing place, great views. Unlike in UK castles, you can go wherever you like on this site. Might be scary with younger kids though!

Great views, really easy to read and understand interpretations. Be prepared to Walk A lot! Also- the breeze was cold even though it was a hot day- maybe bring an extra layer.

We liked this castle visit as much as Pena Palace. While there's not a lot of preserved artifacts or interior here, the walk from the entrance is pleasant and the climb up to the towers is fun. If you can, visit in the evening when...More

This was amazing. A beautiful national park with terrific views, historic remains. I would definitely recommend coming here. Half of the park is free, so you could wander around that, but it's best to go into the park to see everything properly. Some difficult terrain,...More

An incredible castle with spectacular views and interesting look back back at its past. A very long walk to the top but worth it!

The Castle was indeed ruins, just walls and walkways left. It was incredibly windy (which made it cold). I climbed to the top of the battlements, and I thought going up was bad, but coming down seemed harder. Lots of uneven, different size steps. Then...More

Due to the one-way road up past the Moorish Castle and Pena Palace, the tourist traffic runs counter-clockwise from the town, a long way up to the Moorish Castle followed soon by Pena Palace at the top, then back down into... More

I will be visiting Sintra and will be staying approximately 30 in Lisbon (by taxi). Can anyone please tell me if taking a taxi is a good idea? Also, any detailed information about the best way to navigate to Pena place park, Castle of the Moors and Quinta da Regaleira. Any tips are welcome. THANKS!

The taxis are far less inexpensive than most countries but the trail is even cheaper. Depending on your financial situation and your ability to navigate through the train stations. If it is somewhere that you are not... More

Various tour companies will take you there and then to Pena Palace in Sintra. I am not sure if you can reserve a guide on its website though.
