Beautiful walk with a smashing turning point. You will need a car to get to the starting point or an organised trip. A must do if you like hiking.

This is one of the best levada hikes in Madeira. We went during rainy season, January, but it was still beautiful. You ascend into a cloud forest, and follow the irrigation channels for 4 miles until you get to the magnificent waterfall of Caldeirão Verde. Following the levada takes you close to vertical drops, round waterfalls, through tunnels, and under falling water. Very refreshing (I'd imagine even more on a hot day). Quite quiet. The end point itself is fantastic and more spectacular than photos I've seen so I was pleasantly surprised. The scenery doesn't really get going until later in the walk but there's... More

This is so far our favorite walk in Madeira. Beautiful woods, amazing views, pretty difficult very long hike. It has 4 tunnels on its way, so to go through you have to have a torch. Watch your head all the time- the roof is low and uneven! You need a pair of good walking shoes that are not only lightweight... More
