Walked up from Teixeira, which is a short drive out from Santana. The walk to top of Pico Ruivo is only 2.8km from here and is a achievable by anyone in reasonable health. The tops are covered by cloud most of the time, so try to pick the right day to do the walk to benefit from the views. We... More

Pico Ruivo, at 1861 meters, is the highest peak in Madeira. My husband and I, after having done consecutive hikes for 3 days, decided to take the easier way to Pico Ruivo, via Achada do Teixera. If I remember correctly, the trek from Achada to Pico Ruivo was less than 3 kilometers but I had to stop a few times... More

It's all about the getting to and going from. The scenery changes initially to what resembles the new forest. Odd I know. Gorse heathland with cows and cattle grids but with valleys with clouds in them. You gradually rise and the scenery changes to deep green valleys with blue seas beyond up to peaks of stone and even better views.... More

This walk to the highest peak in Madeira is quite strenuous but can be undertake by most people of reasonable fitness levels. Allow at least 3 hours for the return walk from the car park. This path climbs gently for most of the way and there are several shelters with seats along the path. There is a cafe near the... More

Be there close to the sunset, a couple of hours so you can explore several sites around you. Between 17:30 GMT to 18:00 GMT be there. If you are lucky you will feed yourself like inside the cockpit on a smooth flight. Just a few feet bellow the clouds welcome you without the movement of the aircraft, the "cockpit" is... More

The views here are truly amazing. Absolutely worth a visit to the top. If it's clear you can see for miles and it's most definitely worth it. We were lucky to go up when it was clear.

There are absolutely brilliant views from up here, you can virtually see for miles on a clear day. There is a wee concrete tower which my husband climbed up, as I was too short to do so and he got some good photos. The scenery of the surrounding area is stunning.

Visited here in the spring this year. Unfortunately the weather in Funchal was beautiful, but not so up here. I can imagine it would be magnificent on a brilliantly cloudless day.

As part of the off road jeep safari we reached the highest point on the island along dust tracks. What a way to see the island. Much better than the buses orvhireing a car. The guide is so knowledgeable. This is a must if you are staying here.

This is the highest pic in the island acessible by car. The other pic areiro is more high but only acessible by foot trail. The view is very nice, but it could be a little cloudy some times. The nature is fabulous! You must see it.
