Very intricate silver work, paintings and statues. Amazed to find such quality on Madeira as worthy of capital city anywhere. Well worth the €5 entrance fee. Couldn't resist taking a photo of seated figures as such a camp pose from one on far right.

This is the most glorious Museum, in an ancient building - with plenty of space to see the exhibits. There are paintings dating from the 1400s, and sculptures covering the same period; the artists are Dutch, Flemish, French - the great painters of religious art....More

Undoubtedly a first class collection of mainly Flemish religious art. The entrance fee is very modest so if you are interested in this type of art, you will consider an hour here an absolute bargain and a gem of a find. If not, you may...More

If you're a fan of religious art (and we are) then this is a rare and unexpected gem tucked in Funchal. There is something quite beautiful in taking religious statuary and painting and making it accessible in a museum environment where you can marvel at...More

While the Flemish art is perhaps the most (justly) famous aspect of the collection, spare more than a glance for St George & the dragon, the last supper, and the tetracotta St Sebastian.

If you are pushed for time make sure you don't miss the Flemish works of art on the top floor which are said to be among the best in Europe. The rest of the museum has lots of beautiful silver work amongst other things. The...More

For the small sum of 5 euros you can see some of the most beautiful works of art from the 1500's and the most amazing collection of silver church items I have ever seen.

There are a number of paintings from the Flemish and Portuguese schools taken from island churches. Additionally some very fine religious artefacts such as thuribles and incense boats. Unless you have a particular interest in these, the tour may not be for you.

We had to climb a lot of stairs to the start of the Museum. We did not see a lift but there must be one. Once on the 1st floor there should not be any trouble with wheel chairs. There would be plenty of space to get a wheel... More
The museum website says there are open from 10am to 1pm. You say they are closed on Sundays? Hope not. We will be on the island next month and don't want to miss this!
