Go in past the beggars on the steps. Very impressive inside with ornate gold work. Unable to go right up to the altar as Communion was taking place. Got in just in time as once that was over the priest left and the building was...More

A beautiful cathedral with amazingly ornate decorations throughout. Visited as a tourist but also went to a mass there which was wonderful, even though we had no idea what the priest was saying. worth a trip

Conveniently located right in a center of Funchal. Go there and have lunch after that in one of the cute little restaurants or cafes of Funchal!

Always worth visiting a cathedral in my view. This is smaller than a lot you would see in the world, but pretty non the less

The cathedral sits at the heart of Funchal and is beautfuly decorated with fine knot work ceilings influenced by arabian artwork. I thought it was a peacful cathedral- a good place to compose one's thoughts away from the hubbub of funchal. Services are held regularly...More

Its not as impressive and beautiful from the interior decor, as the Jesuit Church, but here you can feel the heart of Funchal beating.

Catholic mass can be long: feels long especially in Portugese! Nice for a quick look around as many other types of churches or religious building.

This is a very special place to visit. It is only open at certain times and visitors are asked to leave during service. Inside you will find stunning artwork and sculptures.

The cathedral looks plain from outside, nice inside. Quite dark but nicely decorated. It has great cedar wood ceilings, really architectural phenomenon.
