A wonderful little museum. Displays of fish, birds and mammals. Small aquarium. Most of the museum was closed for a ten year programme of refurbishment so admission was free. Still worth a visit.

It has not changed much in all the time we have been visiting/living here, except the turtle has gone from the aquarium. Museums have moved on, this one hasn't.

This small museum close to Sao Pedro Church is worth a look (only costs 3.86 euros). There is a small aquarium with local fish and a photogenic octopus, an exhibitio about the Maderian laurel forests and many stuffed birds and fish. The building itself is quaintly old school and has a nice atmosphere.

Having seen natural history displays at the Botanic Gardens we expected to see more exhibits. However we were very disappointed especially have paid to go in, it wasn't worth the entrance fee. We first went to the aquarium which I found very claustrophobic so much so that I had to leave it immediately, even the revolving door was claustrophobic and... More

This museum is small and very old-fashioned, mostly a collection of stuffed animals, birds and sea life. Interesting to those of a zoological background, or to fans of bad taxidermy, but not a place that will amuse the kids for hours or enlighten you much about the island's unique ecosystem. Due to Madeira's geological youth, this particular museum doesn't even... More

The aquarium has large fish in small tanks on their on or with a shelled thing that doesn't interact. One fish in particular seemed very sad. Another fish seemed keen to come up to the glass when you put your hand there. These fish need love and more space. They need attention. I think there should be one big tank... More

While I can't fault anyone for operating on a budget, I wouldn't have minded paying a bit more if it meant the fish were in bigger and nicer tanks with more greenery and more variety of fish. The taxidermy collection was interesting especially as they were all endemic species to Madeira and Porto Santo, but the somewhat dowdy decor and... More

The museum is located a bit uphill in Funchal. The people inside are friendly and the entrance fee is rather low (3.50 euro per person). There is some information about the flora and fauna of Madeira on the second floor, with an impressive amount of animals (birds, mamals, fish), which really shows the extensive wild life of Madeira. Downstairs there... More
