After a long walk up the hill I figured out that the fortress is temporarily closed. The waitress in the lovely café behind the fortress informed me that the local government wants to turn it into a museum. The date for the reopening is unknown so far. Nevertheless I enjoyed the beautiful view from the newly built terrace.

It's a very steep climb to the fort and unfortunately it isn't open at the moment due to restoration, it would have been nice if some information had been advised before the walk to it.

After a long, steep climb up to the fort we found out it is closed for renovation - even though there is no notification of this anywhere, found out from the waitress at the cafe which is open and serving drinks and food.

Stunning views of Funchal, a little bit of history as you walk round this fort, be aware it's not open to look around inside but there is a nice coffee shop at the top after you have walked up the very steep pathways to reach it. Worth a visit if you have a couple of hours free.

If you want to visit this fortress you can take the car or go by foot. It's a good walk from the center of Funchal to this place, but the views are superb! There is a good place to have a quick bite or have a drink. Fortress itself is closed at 6 though.

The fortress of “São João Baptista do Pico” is situated on the height called “Pico dos Frios” which is in the location of “São Pedro” in Funchal, and it was at a few minutes’ drive from our hotel “Four Views Bahia”. The fortress was built on top of this hills, in the first place to have a defensive position of... More

We tried to visit this attraction... But it is closed... Surroundings inspire potential and the nearby cafe is great. It has a small children's park.

Really not much you can see in the fort. But the views over Funchal city are spectacular. Also a nice cafe/bar on the same location.

The Fort in the old town is an excellent restaurant that must be tried at least once when in Funchal. The setting, atmosphere and level of service are excellent. The food is first class, there is a set meal at 42 euros per person that is well worth the outlay. You can pay this sort of price in the old... More

There is a steep walk up to the Fort but it provides excellent views over Funchal. When it opens after refurbishment it should be even better. We certainly will return then. There is a coffee shop at the Fort. The walk back took us through some parts of Funchal we had not seen.
