OK - if you like convents, you should probably visit here. If you don't you shouldn't. Its pretty simple. However, the convent is woefully underkept - EUR2 per visitor is not a lot of money - and the tour guide we had was rather depressing. There are many interesting things to see but the tour lacks vim and enthusiasm.

We waited 10 minutes or so for our guide having paid our Euro2 each entry fee. The tour started with 8 English speaking visitors and a very bored guide. Soon another 2 visitors joined and after a couple of different areas more and more visitors joined the group. Some were French speaking so the guide spoke in both languages but... More

We did not do the complete tour of the monastery, just visited the church to see the tiled walls. It is like something I have never seen before, quite amazing. We also visited the Church at the bottom of the street (Sao Pietro I think) It also has lovely tiling on the walls.

....but this was a lovely and interesting place to visit. We were surprised to discover that the visit is guided - for 2 euros (seniors!) each. Only 12 nuns left, and five of them are over 100 years old - amazing. A fascinating insight into a religious order.

Cheap tour. Interesting. Close to centre and worth a trip. Good to get an idea as to how a closed order used to function

After reading the other reviews I was all ready for a Faulty Towers at the nunnery experience! However it went a bit sad... So the tour just goes all the time and you just join as you arrive. This is tricky as no one can remember when the joined - nor can the guide. The guide claimed to speak fluent... More

Santa Clara is quite difficult to find as it also houses a nursery but a guided tour is a must and do it soon as there is a rumour that shortage of funds may soon preclude having the staff to provide the tours. However, once inside the remarkable building, the paintings and furnishings take you back in time to a... More

Very nice architecture, if you are in Funchal then you should give this place a visit, doesn't take long to look around.

Great guide who spent time showing us around and explained all the history of the monastery and the nuns, who live here. Lots of old tiles, alters and areas of prayer. Some very elaborate and some plain. These days some of the area is used for a children's play/ nursery and lovely to hear the children.
