The cradle of Portugal

Medieval streets, a thousand year-old castle, a ducal palace, the cradle of Portugal. Tasty food, quit atmosphere, friendly people.

The old part of Guimaraes is lovely and very pleasant to stroll around well worth the trip. If you are interested in history and old buildings then visit the medieval area. It is Unesco World Heritage, thankfully. Here the old property appears lived in not abandoned or replaced with ugly concrete buildings like new areas in Guimaraes and in many... More

Park your car and spend at least an hour walking the alleys in the historical centre. Wonderful buildings and history.

A bunch of beautiful houses, praÇas, churches, within the old walls. A very nice time walking around this small place.

I had such a nice day here. It was really beautiful. I took the train from Oporto to Guimarães at S.Bento station for 3euros to get here and I definitely recommend it. The town center is authentic and the view is absolutely breath taking.

The historic center of Guimaraes has maintained its medieval "feel", from the cobblestoned streets to the wonderful castles, churches, houses and restaurants. Definitely worth a day trip if you're in the Porto area!

It really is a beautiful city with many old buildings and streets to see. We visited in January and although it was fairly mild , there weren't the outdoor cafes you would get in warmer weather. We went to the tourist office and from the summer photos it looks to be wonderful in the summer months. We visited the convent... More

Amazing city that shows where Portugal started. You can walk on the streets and see the better that Portugal has:Churchs, gardens, streets, museums, cafés and shops. The atractions are near from each other, but you have to Walk hard because it has Staps and difference of level bethween the streets. Enjoy-it!

The best thing about the historical center is that you can get so much history in a relatively small area! Cute streets that transport you right back to the past! Very pleasant tour!

It was interesting learning the founding of Portugal happened here. Our guide provided us the background information. The center is very beautiful and should be walked. This was the first capital of the country and worth a visit.
