At Alberto Sampaio Museum everything combines to leave the visitor wanting to return here.

We get thrilled without knowing why. What is certain is that visitors feel serenity and left enchanted by the beauty of the set.

This is the only national museum that opens its doors during the night, in the months of July and August. Visit this "museum at night" is an experience you will never forget.

This museum certainly deserves, "all visits and visitors makes swears to come back here every time we're in Guimaraes" (Jose Saramago).

A museum of classical religious art, mainly from the church nearby, beautiful cloister, some interesting works. Not a must. Ridiculously small notice tags for the exhibits, almost impossible to read.

We were on a trip to the historic centre, when the thunderstorm that had been brewing all day began and so we dived in here for shelter. On the ground floor are a series of cloisters surrounding a garden and as we sat here amid the beauty of the cloisters the heavens opened, the thunder crashed and the whole place... More

The first advantage is to see the cloister of the church, then you see a downstairs room with some monumental pieces, but upstairs is a treasure trove of paintings, frescoes, and statuary. Small is beautiful and this should not be missed. Buy a joint ticket for the castle and palace!

We really enjoyed this place, which has some very unusual objects. We went with three small childre (8, 7 and 4) and they all found something they were interested in.

This Museum is situated in the Historical District of Guimaraes. It is located in an old convent and the convent cloisters next to the Church da Oliveira. Alberto Sampaio was the first director of the Museum and was instrumental in bringing together this wonderful collection of Religious and Historical Artefacts mainly from the Guimaraes area. Jewel in the Crown for... More

It was a very nice opportunity of knowing this garden museum area. In the claustro/ patio inside this building it is possible to see a big olive tree. The biggest i ever see!

Superb, all-encompassing museum. This should be every visitor's first stop when in Guimaraes as it gives a most informative history lesson of the city and the surrounding area. There is a fascinating exhibition that focuses on religious art, an impressive weaponry exhibit and superb cloister. Multiple languages are represented in the exhibitions and the layout is easy to follow. The... More

... since the museum was closed, but we visited for the war machines exhibit (catapults, trebuchet and such). The inner garden on its own is interesting, with a couple of tombs and my new friend the monk holding a skull :)

We were attracted by the special exhibition and paid what we thought was the inclusive fee to be then told the exhibition was not included and we would have to pay a new fee - but if we had paid a combined fee we would have saved 5 euros each - unfortunately the desk clerk didn't mention this. The museum... More
