Casa da Musica was conceived to mark 2001, the year in which Porto was Cultural Capital of Europe, and it is the first new building in Portugal to be entirely dedicated to music - to the presentation and public enjoyment of music, to music education and to the creation of music. The project took shape in 1999 after the Rem Koolhaas & Ellen van Loon - Office for Metropolitan Architecture won the international architectural competition. Work began in 1999 on the site of Porto's former central tram garage on the Rotunda da Boavista, and Casa da Musica opened its doors to the public on April 15th , 2005. Casa da Musica was planned as a home for all types of music and it is not only part of the urban redevelopment of Porto but also part of a network of cultural facilities, for the city of Porto and for the wider world. Underlying it is an innovative and wide-ranging cultural project, which aims to make an exciting contribution to the national and international music scene, as an arena for all types of musical events - from classical music to jazz, from fado to electronic music, from great international productions to more experimental projects. Besides concerts, recitals and other types of performance, Casa da Musica also organises events for musicians and musicologists and invests in research into the origins of Portuguese music. In addition, it plays a very important role in music education. It is a cultural meeting point between music and other areas of artistic creation and knowledge, providing a space for all kinds of audiences and creators.

Koolhaas did an master piece in Porto. The building is unbelievable and very well located. We took the guided tour (you can't do it on yourself like in the past) and the guide was precise, spoke the necessary, allowed us to watch the test of the orchestra. Great coffee downstairs. Breathtaking view on the restaurant. Make a stop at the... More

The building is a must see not just for those liking the arhitecture but for everybody. You can inside. Concrete and metal materials were used. Beatiful. They have a special room where you can by old vinil records from 1 eur.

Architect or simply turist, this is a Project/Building to get too know. Its central location will also allow to go down to the seeside or to go to the River side. Just easy to get there, and have something to eat in the neighborhood.

It's a lovely place to tour around but coming across it after hearing so many wonderful thoughts is a little disappointing. However we only did the general tour and I imagine watching a performance there to be something entirely different.

We had pre-booked a concert before we arrived in Porto and were unaware that tours were also offered. The day after the concert (Alina Ibramigova) we returned for the tour and another concert. That we could not go into the main hall during the tour was irrelevant to us. We did get a very knowledgeable tour guide, who was prepared... More

It's a very special, unique building surrounded by a modern square. Although it is a bit of a travel from the city center, it is worth to go see it.

As the photo shows, this concert hall is ultra modern. However, from the inside, the approach is more traditional in choice of shape. 19th century concert halls usually had long and straight shapes giving them excellent acoustics. 20th century halls tried to make audience visibility more important, sacrificing acoustic veracity. This hall adopts a retro attitude to the shape of... More

The hotel was nice, the music theme was interesting. There is a food court connected to the restaurant which gives you lots of food choices as well as nightly DJ/live music, however, if you would like to go to bed early you may not be a fan of the music at night. The air conditioner did not work while we... More

very interesting venue where stage can be set in a number of different ways. Modern and spacious with a very good café for cakes, snacks coffee and drinks. Very close to Casa de musica metro station ( not surprisingly!) at town end of Ave de beauavista
