Following futile attempts at locating Athens national art gallery/ and Museum of contemporary art (they has been closed for past 2 years - awaiting funds to finally open at new premises in FIX building - no news of it happening any time soon) ... we finally found Municipal Art gallery. I have to admit that of all places Athens seemed... More

This museum was disappointing. There were very few artworks and they were badly curated. Also the man at the desk followed us around the museum like we were going to steal the paintings. A disappointing representation of Greek participation in 20th century western art!

I came here to vista because it was recommended by a friend. No fee to go in and the selections of Arts are very interesting. It is small but worth it. During my visit, the staffs were very nice and helpful. There was 2 groups of school kids having their tour at the museum. It is worth visiting if you... More

My husband and I really enjoyed our trip to the municipal gallery. The artwork was beautiful and intriguing. Also the guards must have changed since the bad reviews because they were all really friendly and gave us plenty of space.

The museum hosts paintings of artists created in the first half of the 1900's. It's a good and relaxing escape from the turbulent surrounding area. It's a very clean place and the fact the entrance is free is a big plus as well. The only thing that kind of put me off were the security people which made me personally... More

Stepping into the Municipal Art Gallery, was a perfect reprieve from a long day of touristy sight seeing. The art is beautiful and the fact that the majority of the artists are Greek deepens the spirit of the place. Also, the hours are great and the neighborhood of Mextaxorgeio is a fun place to explore! On a side note, I... More

At first sight the gallery is in a beautiful building and the art space is modern and inviting.Unfortunately this is where the great vibe ends, as I fail to see how one can appreciate the art whilst being shadowed from painting to painting by menacing security guards. Needless to say the beauty of the art could not keep our hearts... More

Near the heart of Metaxourgeio is the Municipal Art Gallery. This unassuming building houses a fair sized collection of art, ranging many different art movements. The colorful descriptions of the different art movements' Grecian interpretations are both in Greek and English. Overall, I really enjoyed my time here, especially because it's free and in such a beautiful and vibrant neighborhood.
