No visitor to Crete, especially European, should leave the island without visiting the Museum of Heraklion. There are many larger museums in Europe and in the world, but none of them features exhibits which come exclusively from the vicinity. This is what makes this museum so special. It depicts the start of European civilisation. It has been modernise and all... More

Great museum if you are into Greek archaeology. Many on display. Remember students get a discount on the ticket to get in, so bring your student ID with you.

If you're a history buff, you have to see. If you're an art buff, you have to see. Archaeology buff? Well duh, go! This museum covers all stages of the Minoan civilization. Ancient artifacts are displayed over expert representations of what they believe the piece once appeared, filling in the "holes" as best they can. I was here with a... More

We only paid 6 euro each to get in but spent a good few hours in here. If you are one for goddess imagery, pottery, weaponry and archaeology /ethnoarchaeoloy you will love it. This place also contains finds from Knossos and famours artifacts which you will see throughout Crete like the snake goddess, phaistos disc and two bees. There was... More

the surprise I found here is that they have all the items from their island... most places lose their finds being brought into the big cities but this museum has it all... It was truly unbelievable

One of the most important museums in the world. Here is the place where European civilization started some four thousand years ago. After visiting Knossos Palace, coming to the museum will give you a better idea of what was going on in the lives and culture of the Minoans. I believe it is a MUST!!!

This is where the Minoan civilisation comes to light in all its splendour, with all its power and international links. We went twice over three days, and only scratched the surface. A wonderful museum with charming staff and great pride in the collections.

We visited the archaelogical museum of Heraklion last December and we admired the ancient minoan sculptures and the archaelogical treasures from the Minoan civilization.

At least 1 hour should be spent here, plus 1.30 - 2.00 hours in Knossos palace (7 - 8 kilometeres from here, not to walk).
