St Nicolas Orfanos church, lost in the alleys of the Ano Poli, in Thessaloniki, still conserves the atmosphere of the old byzantine-ottoman city resembling a confusing, yet enchanting maze inviting visitors to wander around and discover its beauties! Here you will enjoy the beautiful garden with the cypress trees and the turtles walking around, while in the small church you... More

The Church also served as the catholicon of a Byzantine monastery. It is built in the aisleless timber – roofed type with ambulatory, ending in the east with two chapels. Its exquisite mural decoration is one of most complete painting complexes preserved in Thessaloniki and is representative of Palaeologan art. Of the monastery complex, excluding the catholicon, only ruins of... More

This is a true gem - some of the BEST Byzantine frescos of Macedonian style (lighter than the typical Byzantine icons style, more naturalistic, with blues and greens) in the whole of Greece, I think; and it's in one of the loveliest locations in Thessaloniki

This little church is in the old part of town, so the place is quiet and one can really get the feel for the spiritual side of it. When i was visiting there was literally 2 people in the church and 5 locals sitting outside talking to the priest. The inside of the church is a bit dark but filled... More

The Church of Agios NIkolaos Orphanos is situated in Ano Poli (Upper Town) of Thessaloniki. It is a really small and cute building from architectural point of view. Loved the frescos. There is a small green yard. It is open in the mornings. Must visit!

A place so quiet, so beautifull and really very moving. Inside, the church is very simple and even if you are not religious, you'll be caught. Wonderfull !

This tiny church, divided for men and women, and with every wall covered with biblical frescoes, sits in a small garden with a large Linden tree (covered with fragrant blossoms in May). It felt like a special place.

This was a really stunning surprise. this little church (looking not all too much like a church from the font side) lays in a little walled garden. when we passed by the first time, the church was closed. but fortunately we made it another day. gios Nikolaos Orphanos offers the best and really amazing fresco painting in Thessaloniki. they are... Walking up Apostolou Pavlou Street you will head towards the church of Agios Nikolaos Orfanos. Its entrance is from Irodotou Street. The church was built the 14th century and it was part of a monastery. A big part of the mosaics survived through the centuries and were revealed after the renovation in the late 1950’s. Sources claim that the name... More

It's located in upperside of the city. You can take a stroll at the backyard and enjoy the great view of Thessaloniki.
