Worth the Drive
Jul 2019 • Couples
A high rating for us as we love the outdoors and will take even a short hike when we get a chance. Small but beautiful desert in this island of numerous contrasts.
It was hot and the sand even hotter, not a place for open sandals if you want to enjoy the walk. There is no water on-site so you will want some with you or back in your car after a stroll in heat.

Head to the nearby beach after your visit, it will make for a great day.

After a small rocky road. you will arrive on the sand dunes of Gomati. Excellent point of view with a lot of birds. Dunes are very pleasant, you can work, take pictures. The nature ie really present. I recommend this spot.

nice view, worth the long road
Aug 2018 • Couples
It's very interesting to see it, the sand is always moving. Take water and sun protection. Attention: use the road from the village DAFNI - Δάφνη, it's much better than the other way even it's longer!

Amazing site in a greek island !!

In the island of Lemnos you can find an abundance of sandy beaches, a lot of greenery, a salt lake and ... a real desert. "Amoothines", i.e. sand dunes, is a real desert located in the inland of Lemnos. It really worth the effort and the few kilometers of unpaved road, which was cris-crossed by wild rabbits, to reach this placeand ... after walking in the "desert" you need only a few more kilometers drive to quench yourself at the beautiful sandy beach of Gomati. Amazing!!

Great fun - especially if you bring your ski board with you!

They say that this is the only desert in Europe. I'm not sure about that, but it is a small desert definitely. If you have tried sand boarding, than you can have a great fun. I haven't seen that anyone is doing tours with boards to rent , but some people bring their own boards and have fun in the send (so they say!) I think is possible as I have tried it once in Emirates.
Interesting natural phenomenon , great for taking photos.

Greek desert...
Jul 2017 • Family
of course the access to the sandy dunes of Limnos is a bit difficult, the whole effort is worth to try.
Early in the morning is the best time since it's not too hot.
So you can walk barefoot across the sand and let the children (and the grown ups) play, climb and glide.
The best activity in the island!

I heard positive and negative things for this place from local mainly due to the nasty dirt road until you reach the place. Well it worth to see it, just not as much as I was imagining.

After the asphalt stop (quite far from the sand dunes) there is a short downhill road paved with cement. After that only dirt road follows. The worst part is the downhill dirt road without any road sign or cliff protections. To make matters worse the street is pretty narrow so you have to slowdown considerably when you meet an opposite car. After the downhill there is an easy and short dirt road and you pick the left road at the Y street cross (the right goes to Gomati beach) and you arrived.

Advises: 1. Try to go earlier in the morning to avoid the heat and sun. 2. Be careful on the downhill street. 3. The 4x4 is not mandatory, just recommended (I didn't have one) 4. Near the end of the road at Sand Dunes, it maybe crowed and there isn't much place to turn, consider leaving it some meters before near a flat small parking for that matter.

Sand Dunes of Lemnos
Sep 2015
A very nice experience in a Greek island, (north of Lemnos) some miles away from the sea. Very nice view of the sea.
You feel the desert and the splendor of nature. Worth to pass by and go swimming in the near by beach.
Walk barefoot, the sand is softy embracing your feet, go with a hat the sun is burning. Go early in the morning, otherwise your feet will burn. A very nice sunrise.
