i advice you not to do it on your own.many happened the last ten years and you should be careful..but as you wrote you dont want to pay for guide .then try it .anyhow from prionia to go down to the city of litohoro is not so dangerous as the way from prionia to the top of the mountain..so i think if you know what you are doing .all be safe..enjoy it..
but stay always on the path and take security measures.
