Description:

Christiansborg Palace is situated on the little island of Slotsholmen...

Christiansborg Palace is situated on the little island of Slotsholmen (Castle Island) which is surrounded by canals in the heart of Denmark's capital, Copenhagen. Denmark has one of the oldest monarchies in the world, and the palace has a long, dramatic history which revolves around the exercise of royal power. Today, Denmark is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of governance. Under its beautiful copper roof, the palace houses the Danish parliament, the office of the Danish prime minister and the Supreme Court. It is therefore the center for legislative, executive and judicial power in Denmark. The palace also accommodates rooms for the Danish Monarchy. Focusing on the royal part of the palace, Christiansborg Palace is H.M. the Queen's working palace. This is where the Queen holds audiences, signs laws, holds banquets and receptions, celebrates royal anniversaries and receives state visits. It is a working palace where old traditions and the modern Royal Family meet. You will see dazzling halls, adorned with colorful tapestries, vast paintings, patterned floors, glittering chandeliers, and sumptuous stucco ceilings. You can explore The Royal Kitchen and see its two tons of shiny copper kitchenware. You can visit the beautiful palace chapel, stand underneath its dome and let your head spin as you gaze up at the angels in the ceiling décor more than 30 metres above you. In The Royal Stables you'll find the the white royal horses in the wintertime, and in the summertime the exhibition "All the kings' horses" - all year around you can see the Royal Family's array of carriages. One of them is coated with 24-carat gold leaf. You can also explore the underground ruins underneath Christiansborg Palace. These are ruins of earlier castles and palaces showing that the Castle Island is steeped in 800 years of power and political intrigue.

Make sure you go up the Tower - it is free and has a lift and is open all day. On a clear day you get an amazing view - even on a rainy day the look down into the riding ring area and so forth is worth it. Be prepared for a security check and a queue.

You can't really go to Copenhagen and not see or go past the parliament building. Recommend a visit to the ruins under the palace as well as the state rooms.

It is hard to miss this palace when you're in Copenhagen, with it's shear size and gigantic tower. I had the opportunity to visit this place by joining a free walking tour in Copenhage. Guys, always look out for free walking tours and please do not forget to tip your guide. You can easily spend about 2 hours just exploring... More

This was my favourite area in Copenhagen, the tower is the tallest in the city and is completely FREE to go up! As well as exploring its exterior, you are only a short walk from the main shopping street in Copenhagen. The Sightseeing bus stops here for on the Mermaid Tour (Red) route.

This beautiful castle was well worth a visit, and our only regret was that we did not have enough time to go again, as we very much enjoyed the round tours! Professional yet amusing guide, her knowledge and passion truly showed and made the tours that much more great!

Christiansborg Palace is a top attraction in Copenhagen. This is home to the Danish parliament so it should definitely be on your list of things to do whilst in Copenhagen. Beautiful palace in the middle of Copenhagen. Easy access. Worth visiting. Love the details of the palace. There is also a top view tower to view Copenhagen town. Hence, make sure you reach the tower before it gets dark.

Easily accessible, friendly staff and well laid out. All included on Copenhagen card and not far to go if you are staying in the centre of town. Walk around at your leisure in a very relaxed atmosphere. It's beautiful and has a very interesting history which is well documented through the different displays.

Christiansborg is a historical building, from which Denmark has been governed for hundreds of years. The inside - as well as the outside - is very impressing, so just go there!
