The Hirschsprung Collection is beautifully situated in the green parklands of the Ostre Anlaeg on the old ramparts of Copenhagen. The museum houses Heinrich and Pauline Hirschsprung's collection of Danish art and first opened its doors to the public in the summer of 1911. The museum was designed by the architect H.B. Storck, while the original interior and display was designed by the art historian Emil Hannover, who also became the museum's first Director. Henrich Hirschsprung donated his collection of works from the 19th century to the Danish state in 1902. The collection includes masterpieces by the Danish Golden age painters such as Eckersberg, Lundbye and Kobke as well as artists from the modern period such as the famous Danish painters P.S. Kroyer and Vilhelm Hammershoi. Opening hours: Wednesday-Sunday: 11 AM - 4 PM. Admission: Adults 75 DDK. Under 18 free.

Finally, I came here, having wanted to come here for years, and I was not disappointed. I’m no expert on Danish painters, but Krøyer is well known, so this was my main reason for coming. I recommend you taking the free audio guide as it...More

A wonderful private collection of art. There are of course a handful of paintings here that are worth the admission fee alone to see. That said there were many painting and works that shone that I had not expected to see. We enjoyed learning about...More

This is a relatively small gallery and there are some lovely works here, but to my mind this isn't a standout collection (in comparison to the Carlsberg Glyptotek for example). It is mostly 19th and 20th century portraits and landscapes. I think perhaps this is...More

This is a wonderfully intimate museum near the State Museum and the David Collection. The collection of Golden Age and modern Danish painting is unparalleled and quite moving to see. Of particular note are paintings by Hammershoi and Slatt-Muller all exhibited in small galleries that...More

This museum wasn't on our list until a Danish couple persuaded us to go. What a delightful surprise. I knew very little about Danish art and was fascinated by this superb collection and its reflection of Danish life, history and landscape. The free audio guide...More

The Hirschprung is small, but for anyone who enjoys Nordic art of the 19th to early 20th century, it is a must see. One can easily spend a hour or more here, and the free audio tour adds to the insights. The highlights are the...More

Denmark's beloved painter is not well known outside of Denmark. This virtuoso post impressionist is well presented in the collection of his biggest patron. Look for his paintings of the ocean.
