Experience Denmark's unique naval history museum with its fleet of model ships and other fascinating exhibits charting the history of Danish naval artillery, dramatic battles at sea with exploding cannons and Copenhagen as an important naval city.

You can see armed sailing ships with proud figureheads, that conjure up thoughts of dramatic sea battles between daring pirates and heroic admirals. Also don't miss the Spaekhuggeren ('The Killer Whale') submarine, in which you can really get an idea of the claustrophobia experienced by the 33 men on board, sailing for months without a glimpse of dry land. The Royal Danish Naval Museum's popular Children's Museum is on the ground floor. One side of this is taken up by a ship's side from a large Danish naval vessel, built using original drawings from the 1700s. Opposite this, is a harbour with a row of sheds, where you can learn about the life of seamen in the age of large sailing ships. You can see what sailors ate when they were at sea, what their clothes looked like, the kinds of punishments that were dealt out on board and much more. Admission to all the exhibitions at the Royal Danish Naval Museum is free, although there is a charge for the guided tours .

Staying in Christianshavn

Neighbourhood Profile
Christianshavn
Just across one of the many bridges from Indre By, you’ll find Christianshavn. An eclectic area with old brick lanes, houses dating back to the 16th century, and canals which are home to many boats and ships, some of which has been turned into restaurants or even serve as fully furnished homes. The best known attraction in Chistianshavn is Christiania, a “free town” of residents who squat on a former military area. However just a stone’s throw away from Christiania, you’ll find some of the most fashionable waterfront apartment buildings in Copenhagen as well as the splendid Royal Opera House.
