From Church to Contemporary Art Centre. St. Nikolaj Church originated in the early 1200s and is Copenhagen’s third oldest church. As a consequence of the Great Fire of Copenhagen in 1795, the building’s history as a church came to an end in 1805. Nikolaj Kunsthal presents 5-6 Danish and international exhibitions every year. Exhibitions that give visitors the opportunity to encounter experimental and innovative art - including our annual exhibition for children and young people. See you at Nikolaj Kunsthal

I love this beautiful building. Kind of sad that it is not being used as a church but glad to see that it hasn't been forgotten or torn down and is being used. The architecture of the building alone is worth the visit.

We found during our stay in Copenhagen that there was just so much to see and do. Unfortunately time constraints did not allow us to go into every fascinating building which we came to. This was the case with the Nikolaj Kunsthal, a former church...More

This pretty building perfectly clicks with the whole Copenhagen architecture, thought, after renovation, it was never been a "real" church.

Just a few steps away from Amagertorv and Strøget, this church is actually not a church, but a Contemporary Art Center. In my opinion the exterior, with its Neo-Baroque 90-meter long spire, is much more worth a stop by.

Found by chance, this church really hit my heart. Wonderful and in the typical scandinavian style, it is definetely worth to be visited.

The building was constructed in the early 1900 on the remnants of a burnt out church but was never consecrated as church ... now put to much better use as exhibition hall. Changing shows so look up their website for current show.

I got some hard time walking around to locate it. Then when I arrived I found it to be art exhibition. What a disappointment. The appearance from outside is ok, but then the art collection was mediocre. It was not worth the hassle of trying...More

WHen we were first in Copenhagen years ago, we thought this is a real church. But we learned quickly, that is an exhibition hall for modern, mostly contemporary art. It was a very good idea to use the former church as art center.

This is an average art center (at best), located in a stunning renovated 16th century church. All the exhibits literally pale at the magnitude of the church. Forget about the art part. Visit the place for taking a look at was once a stunning church.

This is the heart of old town Copenhagen, with its
blend of charming old buildings and bold new
architecture, broad avenues and tiny streets as well
as picturesque canals and a modern harbor. The inner
city is home to the Royal Danish Theatre, which
consists of three buildings, two of which are new and
situated on the harbor front. The streets, squares and
