This hippy enclave is an alternative community unto itself, with local handicrafts and a disproportionate number of vegetarians, artists and young people. Go for a walk around the lake or check out one of the watering holes. Best to visit during the day.

I always travel to christiania with friends or by myself, for the hasisch and weed smoker you've got loads of different strains, cookies, pure THC etc! A must when you visit copenhagen! Got also lovely parks, food, stage, bars etc!

Christiania is a place of total freedom in Copenhagen - Known for marihuana etc. Police often crash the place and shut down the local shops (it ain’t legal in Denmark) Back in the 70’ it was a hippie place of freedom. It ain’t allowed to...More

The canals here are worth a wander as is the Freetown area. Freetown is scruffy & not the area for children & we had some amusing looks (due to our age 50+) as we passed by the various cannabis concoctions. Abide by the rules of...More

This alternative area in Copenhagen is a love it or hate it sort of area I feel. I wouldn't really recommend it for younger families as it is a bit run down and the numerous stalls selling weed might be a bit inappropriate. However, there...More

Christiania was definitely an experience, and felt worlds away from the Copenhagen we had so far experienced (Nyhavn etc..!). I would recommend it as it as a unique experience but don’t go with high expectations. 20 minutes was more than enough time to spend exploring...More

It was nice to visit Christiania because it is a very unique place that offers its inhabitants a lifestyle we are not used to seeing. Once entering Christiania there are many rules to be followed. One cannot scream, nor do certain hand gestures, because we...More

I was here just before new years, so there were a lot of fireworks being set off in the streets. The vendors were all really nice and answered all of my questions. I ate at the small kebab stand near the outside market with all...More

Just across one of the many bridges from Indre By,
you’ll find Christianshavn. An eclectic area with old
brick lanes, houses dating back to the 16th century,
and canals which are home to many boats and ships,
some of which has been turned into restaurants or even
serve as fully furnished homes. The best known
attraction in Chistianshavn is Christiania, a “free
town” of residents who squat on a former military

I guess you have to accept it for what it is. It's a community and home to many people who enjoy this way of life. Personally I wouldn't choose to live there myself as myself and my family have different needs but I can... More
