This hippy enclave is an alternative community unto itself, with local handicrafts and a disproportionate number of vegetarians, artists and young people. Go for a walk around the lake or check out one of the watering holes. Best to visit during the day.

We walked through this Freetown. It may not be for everyone with weed and hash readily available but it's a must see at least to walk through it. It's the wild Wild West in the middle of Copenhagen.

On walking in to christiana it felt like a bad day in Camden market. BUT... walk off the main area and it's a beautiful creative space. Hang out later in the evening and listen to music and talk to the locals. Don't judge at first...More

I heard so much about this area and was really looking forward to enjoying a different type of setting - alas, other than hype this place has nothing to offer. Unless you consider some dinky market selling cheap trinkets made in China a "must see"....More

Want to see a very laid back area? Go here! It resembles an old school hippie hangout. Food, drinks & more are widely available on terraces. Copenhagen is a great place but do visit this if you have the time!

Christania is very different from other areas of Copenhagen. It is an area of approximately 900 inhabitants. The area was originally disused and then inhabited by "squatters " Who then had squatters rights. It is now a tourist attraction that is well worth a visit....More

In the middle of the city of Copenhagen you can find a place where you feel free without stupid rules. I really like the idea about being a freetown with its own rules. This is what i like about the Christiania. What makes me uncertain...More

I really liked the woods and Street art. The residents we came across were very welcoming. Not a good idea to take photos or be disruptive. I would recommend going to see how this community is set up and what a haven considering how close...More

Got told about this place by a local and visited it, was pleasantly surprised at how cool it was. Good food, drinks (and people selling hash) good vibe for all, even families

Just across one of the many bridges from Indre By,
you’ll find Christianshavn. An eclectic area with old
brick lanes, houses dating back to the 16th century,
and canals which are home to many boats and ships,
some of which has been turned into restaurants or even
serve as fully furnished homes. The best known
attraction in Chistianshavn is Christiania, a “free
town” of residents who squat on a former military

I guess you have to accept it for what it is. It's a community and home to many people who enjoy this way of life. Personally I wouldn't choose to live there myself as myself and my family have different needs but I can... More
