The Vessels at Holmen: the Submarine Saelen, the Guided Missile Boat Sehested and the Frigate Peder Skram. Get close to history on board three naval icons from the Cold War. The vessels stand as if they have just been taken out of service, and are open to visitors during the summer and autumn holidays. In the submarine Saelen the smell of diesel still lingers and the coffee pot still hangs from the ceiling, Sehested is rigged as if it is about to sail into battle and the frigate Peder Skram, once the largest warship of the Danish navy, is still an impressive sight. All three vessels were amongst the most powerful options that Denmark had to defend its territory with during the Cold War. Denmark purchased the submarine Saelen during the Cold War and it is the only Danish submarine to have been active in a warzone - during the Iraq War in 2003. Come on board and experience the psychological stamina and steady disposition it takes to serve on a submarine. The 24-man crew could be confined to the limited space on board for as long as three weeks at a time. To visit the Ships at Holmen, you need to join a guided tour. There are guided tours every half hour and it is possible to buy joint or separate tickets for the ships. Admission for children under 5 years old is free. The Vessels at Holmen are open for visits in the summer period. During the rest of the year, guided tours can be booked at the Royal Danish Arsenal Museum.

We walked around the Peder Skram ourselves and saw several different exhibitions inside it. We also took part in a guided tour of the Sælen which was very informative.

It was a bit surprising to see these vessels near the Old Town. Anyway naval development was the most important part in the entire Danish history.

Berthed at the pier of this former naval base are several naval ships, mostly from the Cold War period. You can visit a frigate FDMS Peder Skram, A missile boat HDMS Sehested and a submarine HDMS Saelen.

Just across one of the many bridges from Indre By,
you’ll find Christianshavn. An eclectic area with old

some of which has been turned into restaurants or even
serve as fully furnished homes. The best known
