The City Museum is closed for renovation, to reopen during autumn 2017 with a new permanent exhibition focusing on stories of Stockholm. New exhibition spaces mean that many never-before-seen objects can be displayed. Stockholm's history is an adventure, and you will get to experience it in a brand new way! During the time for renovation we organize public city-walks every day. Most of them in Swedish. You are always welcome to book a private guided tour in English. Available tours in English includes the historic Stockholm and the Old town, the Millennium tours (the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), ABBA City Walk, The World Heritage Woodland Cemetery and visits to The City Museums four historically restored apartments.

Nice visit

It's funny, interesting, educating. If you buy regularly ticket for 100 SEK, you get special annual card to this museum which is valid to Stockholms Medeltidsmuseum. So, you could... read more

The museum is still closed for renovation and will be for till 2017. There is a small temporary exhibition close to the Central Station. Your time is better spent at other points of interest and museums.

The building looks nice, though there's lots of construction around it, and we couldn't manage to find the entrance. Where we thought it was, it didn't appear to be accessible But the building is nice!

Nicely set out, very pleasant docent who explained a lot. So interesting to see the development of this city and to learn about the citizens who formed it.

Historiska museet is a better option. Some exhibitions are the same but the standard exhibitions are better there

The Stadsmuseum is still listed on the Stockholm Card, but it is not currently open. A sign by the elevators said it is under renovation until 2017. The district around it is lively in summer, lots of merchants and food sellers and what looked like some interested nearby restaurants. Also pay toilets. Not bad views of the city either. But... Although very tricky to find on the internet, the Stockholm City Museum offers a Millenium tour through Södermalm visiting places in the books and films described. The guide is very entertaining and well informed. Plus, with the Millenium Tour you see beautiful places of Stockholm you wouldn't see if you just follow your typical travel guide.

It's quite cheap, you pay 100SEK to go to the city museum and the medieval museum, for a whole year. If you're 19 or younger, it's completely free. We liked the set-up, it's a big building in the middle of Slussen. We really enjoyed the small "houses" inside that show how people used to live. Also the exhibition about the... More

I just found out this place almost by accident, and became very well impressed. I has a lot of Svenska Historia, and it is free.

Frankly this museum would be rather disappointing if it wasn't for the big exhibition about crime in Stockholm. It is really interesting to see history of the city in darker perspective and see how the law and perception of crime has changed through years from general and individual perspective. I also enjoyed the display of photos showing cities called Stockholm... More

Staying in Slussen

Neighbourhood Profile
A unique mix of grotesque 1960s concrete urban vision and cosy historical Swedish brick houses, Slussen has become one of Stockholm’s most architecturally edgy and controversial neighborhoods. Plans to rebuild the area have been on the agenda for decades, however, so far no agreement could be reached, which is the reason for the continuing decay of its brutalist substance. Nevertheless, the museums and the main shopping street, Götgatan, attract both locals and tourists with Sweden’s most fashion-forward clothing retailers, hipster coffee shops and restaurants. Once the lights are out, the area turns into a bustling nightlife haven, catering to all preferences, from posh hotel bars to sweaty underground nightclubs. There is no better place to experience the clash between old and new Sweden.
