Helsinki Zoo is one of the few zoos in the world located on an island. A 20 minute ferry (summer) or bus ride from the city centre will take you to a zoo where you can travel from cold mountain regions to dry steppes and from northern coniferous forests to the tropical rainforest. It is the perfect place to visit due to its natural environment, animals and history. Helsinki Zoo is home to 150 animal and 1000 plant species showcasing the diversity of nature. Meet the large Amur tigers, tiny pygmy marmosets, agile snow leopards, impressive wisents and dazzling, free roaming peafowls. Not to mention the indigenous Finnish species: elk, bear, wolverine, forest reindeer and more. The zoo was established already in 1889 and this makes it one of the oldest zoos in the world. Despite the long history and historic surroundings, Helsinki Zoo is a modern zoo with a mission to conserve biodiversity. Helsinki zoo breeds endangered species and participates in programs that aim to re-introduce animals to their natural habitats. Helsinki Zoo is renowned for its work in helping endangered big cats. Helsinki Zoo is the most significant annual donor for the conservation of the endangered Amur leopard and tiger.

Have a nice time with family or friends! Nice place to go. Take warm clothes with because it's quiet windy there. As winter time and spring there is more to see while cat animals are moving around, because it's not too hot for them. Possible...More

I recommend to take a boat, but you can also get there by bus or metro. The animals seem happy and they have spacious cages but that also means that it's sometimes difficult to spot them. The bears are my favourite!

It was a good experience. The natural habitats were well designed, which shows the care for animals. However, it really depends on the time of visit to see certain animals and do not expect to see all of them as it might not be their...More

Perfect picnic place, not so many animals (several places were empty during our visit). If You plan to spend a day out then Seurasaari open air museum is better.

We were SO impressed with Helsinki Zoo! The animals have large, natural habitats tailored to their species, so this is a zoo you can feel good about supporting. Besides the animal habitats, the entire property is beautiful and is a breath of fresh air (literally)...More

Hello, Greetings from Australia. We arrive in Helsinki on a cruise for one day in July from 7am until 4pm. We would like to visit the zoo but we have a commitment in the city at 1pm. What is the quickest way to get to the zoo as I noticed it opens at 10am and we want to maximise our time in Helsinki? I understand there is a ferry that takes 40min. Is it possible to drive there quicker, in which case we may organise a taxi, Uber or driver? Kind regards, Skot

Hello, and welcome to Finland! The quickest way depends on where you should be at 1pm. Both the ferry from the Market Place and the bus no 16 from the Central Railwaystation take about 20 minutes. As the first ferry leaves... More
